Made a working backup of No One Lives Forever 2 v1.0 (SecuROM 4.82, I think) with Alcohol 1.4.3.410. Patched game with official update v1.3 (SecuROM 4.84.64.0049) and now it's not working. Now, even after I install the game (v1.0) from the official discs it won't load past the launcher, same as my backup. I've done the uninstall/install thing enough. I've tried installing from both my drives, I fiddled with emu options in Alcohol, the discs were burned correctly, and the .mds files are reasonably good looking, not perfect. The focus now is on the original discs and what's going wrong. To get the game to work I have to use a no-cd fix as my rom drv and writer will fail the protection check. How did SecuROM 4.84xxx make my originals and backup discs unreadable AFTER a BACKUP version was successful on my first try? I did notice some SecuRom junk in my registry, I know it's from the game, but what to do? The only thing I remember doing before everything went to hell was installing Blindwrite which has been since deleted.
hi the main program for securom is 100% blindwrite! also having alcohol on your system can cause problems? not sure if its for safedisc or securom? but on one it does! its either you need latest alcohol or uninstall alcohol? had no problems burning with blindwrite i've done a few securom! originals and backup load whenever needed... Thx...
Rotary: Yes, I've been reading something like this. I did uninstall Alcohol but it didn't help. I'm not sure if it completely cleaned it off but I did a Find for "Alcohol" in my registry every time and deleted everything related to the program. There may be a key that I missed. I've just read the Alcohol forums and there is one key I possibly missed. Thanks for the advice.
hi use blindwrite make your backups with BWA file! then try them you should be good to go! also what game is it? Thx.
Game is No One Lives Forever 2. Even the original game discs won't work anymore so I'm not even worried about making a working copy at this point. Is it possible that an image can be made better than the original discs by editing and enhancing the BWA file?
hi no you wont make it better than originals! but your issue is wierd? i have been trying to work out whats going on here? its confusing that the real game discs wont work now? have you uninstalled all apps!!!! and game!!!! and then install the game again? you probably have but? also do you have anything like daemon tools loaded? and one thing thats different to how i use securom is you updated! the patch! and the game works with no cd patch sort of tells me that the patch [we all know has copy protection in] is doing something? some games wont work after a patch as the protection starts at say v8.4.0000 then install a game update and its v9.0000000 so the game cant read the copy or original as it knows something is wrong! in files let us know how you get on there are good peeps on here to help! Thx..
Hi Rotary, Yes, I uninstalled all sorts of stuff and it did not work. I uninstalled Alcohol, Blindwrite & Nero, kept CloneCD and CDmate installed but not loaded at startup or in the background. I tried various schemes. Used RegCleaner to get rid of remainders in my registry and manually scanned my reg to get rid of the aforementioned burning softwares. I had an old version of Daemon installed but that was uninstalled a long time ago. I'm assuming the original discs I have are not high quality and/or my drives are not great at reading SecuROM 4.8. Apparently you can get lucky once in a while reading these sub-standard discs but it is weird how everything is failing after I patched the game with SecuROM 4.84.64.0049. Other people have reported the exact same scenario. By the way, I also got the lastest firmware for my LTR-40125s CD-RW but that didn't help either. And my rom drive is a cheap I/O Magicspin 56X. I'm using Win98 so I don't have a cool "restore" function like XP does though I should have saved my registry before I installed NOLF2. To sum up where the breakdown occured: -NOLF2 v1.0 with SecuROM 4.84.00.0039 is what comes in the game box. - I decided to make my first install of the game from a backup so I had to back it up. I made an image of the two discs w/ Alcohol 120% 1.4.3.410 with RPMS on reading from my IO Magic at 1X. I use this drive for all my image making and it has never given me a problem but it's certainly not a high end reader. -Burned at 1X or 2X on my LTR-40125s f/w ZSOJ with Alc's emulation options on; backup discs loaded game successfully with each attempt. -NOLF 2 patch v1.3 was installed with SecuRom 4.84.64.0049. From this point on none of my NOLF discs boot the game. Both orig. and backup will install the game correctly, but not launch it. To get the game past the launcher, I must use a no-CD patch. Uninstalling the game and burning software, and reinstalling NOLF2 v1.0 original or backup discs from either drive has advanced nothing. If I had the time I would troubleshoot on a clean system with a clean install of Win98 but I'll have to leave that to some other day. If you suspect anything I've written here may indicate a cause of the problem, let me know. Thanks for reading.
I have since discovered that other original CDs are not working either, SecuROM and Safedisc protected! To finish this thread with some answers here's what to do: The solution: Delete Blindwrite 4.5.2. manually! From my research on various forums I have learned that 4.5.1 anx 4.5.2 suites have caused this problem to many others, too. It's the patin driver, which doesn't remove itself on a simple uninstall of B/W. Uninstall B/W then manually delete these files: \windows\patin.cpl \windows\iosubsys\pcatip.vxd \windows\iosubsys\pcouffin.vxd or uninstall the problem suite and reinstall suite 4.2.5. which apparently removes all patin related stuff and doesn't screw up your system. You can find this version on cdfreaks\blindwrite\ forum under heading "BlindWrite Suite Versions [Download Section] Inc [Golden Oldies]"
