i put in a 40gb hard drive and installed windows xp.i think i f cked it up it only shows 12 gb is there an easy way to get the rest back or am i scewed ?????????
it seems like you partitioned the hard drive, and made a 12 gb partition, then forgot to partition the rest out. you could try putting in your windows XP install disc and go to the umm...i think it's in the install option, then it'll give you a list of where to install it, then tell it to make a new partition, then it'll say how many byte's are remaining, and just put that number into the partition size. when it finishes that just quit out, take out the disc and reboot
thank for repling i hope i dont have to go threw this should i let cd run on startup or open it when windows is already started please tell me more clearly to do this i dont want to mess it up and thanks again
What are the specs on the machine? If you are using an older PII board, its possible it might not be recognized. You could even have a faulty disk controller, although I seriously doubt thats the case. Boot with an XP CD, and check out how the drive is partitioned.
quote>>>>>>>> Boot with an XP CD, and check out how the drive is partitioned will i hurt anything by doing this and if i do boot with cd on start up should i change anything ?????

Check the partition size in windows - Right click on My Computer, select Manage then Disk Management. The window that opens will show the full size of the hard disk and the partition(s) on it. As it is an old mobo, it is possibly a Bios limitation, you can check this by connecting the disk as a slave or secondary to someone else's system which has a newer mobo - if the disk is then seen as the full 40GB then it is a motherboard problem. This can only be corrected by updating the motherboard bios if there is one available or connecting the disk through an ATA controller board which has its own Bios. BTW, what is the make and model of the hard disk ?
maxtor 40 gb in dm.>it says 12.12gb layout>partition i think what happened is i partition the drive to erase it when i installed windows xp i put it under this partion 12gb and not the rest how can i get back to 40gb IS THERE AN EASY WAY. if i put windows xp disk in and chose install and fixed the partions?????????? or will i mess up windows .
that'll fix it. choose install when it tells you to, then you'll see a list with partitions, one will say C: and i think say that windows is installed in it. and the other will say unallocated memory or something like that. one of hte options is create new partition. when you go there, it'll give you a number which is how much space is remaining, just type that number into the box and create the partition. after that you'll go back to the screen with the list and you'll now see a drive C and a drive D. then you can just select quit or whatever
well guys this is what i did took that hard drive out and put it in another pc . ran maxblast 4 and partioned it back to 40 gb .put it back in gateway and ran fresh install xp 40gb shows up now thank god /////////////
