Problem #1:Major issue here. I just bought a Hitachi 500 GB hard drive and I put it in and started my computer. It shows up on the bios page as what it was and I log in. I go to My Computer. Every other disc, removable, dvd(2), cdrw, and the other ide hard drive show up but NOT THE SATA. This is weird because my bootable disc is a SATA as well. The system one is only 80 GB. Problem #2: I kinda ignored my computer upstairs for a while because we moved and had other stuff going on. Anyway, the problem is that every time I hit the "enter" button a Windows search screen appears. No matter what I am doing it pops up...internet explorer typing an address in...hit enter to go to the page i typed in....it goes but the search window comes up too over the internet explorer window.
are you using windows xp sp2, if you are you need to add a drive letter to your new hard drive. You need to use partition software to do it. Window explorer won't recognize a hard drive unless it's labeled, it sees the drive and knows it's there but if it doesn't have that drive letter it won't include it in the inventory.
try this full feature demo, it's from 2005 but it works good on windows xp. When you install it, after you start up from within windows. It will show all your partitions including your new hard drive, left click on the partition and choose mount, next choose a drive letter for it. http://www.redheadedlefty.com/index.php/2006/11/12/free-partition-software/
in windows xp all you need to do is go Start>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Administrative Tools>Computer Management and click on disk management. you should see your drive. you can then right click on it and select format.
thanks. that was what I was looking for. working great. it's a 500GB hard drive. I can't believe it takes 24GB after you partition it. well, it took 1.5 on a 30GB. yup, that figures out about right. thanks again paderickm.
