I hope you all can help. I have a Nokia 6230, worked fine yesterday, this morning, I get a "Insert SIM card" message. Check the card, it's in there. So, I put in my daughter's SIM card, works fine. Stick mine back in, same error message, so I figure SIM has gone bad. So I call Cingular, ask them to activate my new SIM card we got when we purchased a phone a few months ago, but didn't need a new SIM at the time. She took the number down, said give it a few minutes, should be fine. Well, once I stuck it in, I now get "Phone Restricted". I've read many messages on forums on how to get unlock codes. Problem is - why doesn't it ask me that with my daughter's SIM card in there? This new SIM looks a tad different than the ones we had before - all are Cingular, same store.

We've entered several numbers, mainly thinking "security code", not restriction code, so I've probably already screwed it up. But even then, as soon as I stick in the SIM from my daughter's phone, my phone works just fine again. All our phones are different models & makes, if that makes a difference, though probably not. I switch my SIM card from my Nokia back to my Motorola flip phone every once in a while with no problems.

Any help as to whether my phone is truly locked or what???

I also had a weird call the other day from some guy asking me where I got this phone, as he was the owner of this phone, it had his "call back" number on it. I've had the phone since Christmas, bought on ebay, but my phone number is fairly new, but I've never had any wrong numbers, so I'm not sure what he was talking about, or if he had a wrong number. I did read on one board about phones being reported stolen, and being banned, but if this was my problem, no SIM card would work on the phone at all, would it?

I also read somewhere but can't find it again that Nokia 6230 were a little picky about the newer SIM cards? Is this my problem, having a newer version of Cingular's SIM card in the phone? The other one is well over a year or so old...maybe two.

    Thanks for any help!

As for the phone belonging to someone else, it's not going to be blacklisted here in the USA and you have your own sim anyway. Just forget he ever called.

I think you have a sim problem and what i would suggest it to take the sim out, use a t-shirt or something soft and dry and clean the sims golden side real good.

Use a Q tip or whatever you have that's dry and clean the prongs that meet the sim. Sometimes dirt will build up and finger oils will get onto the sims contact areas and cause malfunctions.

If the problem persists, take it to Cingular and tell them to make it work and if they don't, you will have to discontinue service with them.
I'm sure they'll be glad to try something!!

    Thanks for the reply.

If it's a SIM problem with contactors, etc. - why does my daughter's SIM work fine, but the other 2 don't? (My fried one, and the new one...)

I put the new SIM in my old LG1400 flip phone last night, it's working just fine in any phone but my Nokia 6230.

Ok, you say you did get it to show "Phone Restricted", correct? If so, post the IMEI for the phone

    Press *#06#
I'm assuming it's locked to Cingular

Cingular is making changes to their sims and it is possible that the newer 3G sim could be locked from the 6230 you have. This problem is going to start coming up a lot from others.

Yes, I get "Phone Restricted", but ONLY when I used the new SIM. The older SIMs we have work with no problem at all.

The number I got when entering *#06# is: 355032000064042
    Other info:
    6230
    V05.51
    31-08-05
    RH-28
    GSM P1.1
    (c) NMP

    whatever those mean....

Yes, I use Cingular. Bought this off ebay, previous user was Cingular as well, so not sure if it was locked when brand new, but I never did anything to the phone when I received it other than stick my SIM card in. I did send to Nokia for repair this summer, didn't have to do anything when I got it back, except my bluetooth headset won't work now.

New question while I'm at it - How do I set up the bluetooth headset? The previous owner did all the "recognizing" of the headset to the phone before he sent it to me, so I'm not sure what code I'm supposed to enter to get my headset to work again. The headset is the Nokia Wireless Boom Headset HS-4W.

    Thanks!
