    Hi everyone,

Im sorry if i'm posting something that is already up, but i have had a quick look, and couldn't find anything.

    ok, now to my problem.

i bought my computer around 18 months ago. I believe that its running at 64 bit. Actually im almost positive it is, or should be.

I recently went to download virtualdub, and i noticed it was available in 64 bit. This is the first piece of 64 bit software that I have stumbled across (I haven't really been looking :S)

However when i downloaded it, it wouldn't run, claiming that it wasn't a valid Win32 application.

I guess what Im getting at, is,:-

    a) How do I confirm that my PC is running at 64-bit
    and
    b) How do I make it run 64 bit applications

    Any help is greatly appreciated

    Thanks in advance

if your computer was 64 bit the program would run your computer is 32 bit the program you tried to install was 64 bit and your computer told you it was a 32 bit computer

Your computer might have a 64 bit processor, but your windows is the regular 32 bit version *hence the notice about it not being a valid win32 application*.
So you'd need to get windows XP 64 bit edition to be able to run 64 bit applications.

    fantastic,
after making the post i did some more digging, and seen that there was a version of windows available.

However, it mentioned that some of the older programs, and devices wont run on 64 bit.

Is it worth installing xp 64 on another hard disk, and running the two o/s'. Or is there a pretty significant range of 64 bit drivers around now that will help me fix my problems?

Doing a dual boot would be a good idea, those driver issues are still there, and lots of programs don't run properly on win XP 64 yet.

    thanks fiend
I have a 20gig hd, as well as my 200gig, so I started installing xp 64 before i left for work this morning, on my 20.

Ill see how I go when i get home, but thats for your help

Is there any other type of O/S that you would suggest me giving a shot that could be beneficial?

Before I get home, and bust my nut to download all my 64 bit drivers, and reinstall all my programmes, etc, is there any real benefit that I will gain from doing all this.

Or would i be better to continue to run uner 32 bit.

THe only problem Ive had with anything on my computer is the blue screen popping up during my Unreal 2004 sessions, or my age of empires not running smoothly.

    Thanks

Well, a 64 bit processor would be able to make slightly better use of it's resources with a 64 bit piece of software, and it might look a bit nicer, but that's about all.
I personally only use linux in 64 bit, because i found XP 64 to be mostly incompatible with the software i use.

    awesome,

    thanks for all your help.

I just thought that maybe I was missing out on something.
I mean, when I bought the computer I was all hyped about it being 64 bit, and when i got it, I just assumed it was working as it should.

Up until 18 months later when it tells me I cant run a 64 bit prog :S
But Im not a hardcore user, I mean, I jump on to email, dvd stuffs etc, download my music, and play games, but I dont believe that I require to screw my system over with stuffy old Windows that doesnt work properly (surprise surprise).

Once again guys, thanks for your help[
