Hi friends... My brother called me and asked me the best method to burn all 65 episodes of Twilight Zone onto dvd +r's. They are all sitting in his hard drive right now, waiting to get burned. he has only a single layer burner.....
I advised him to buy a new dual layer burner, and burn them to dual layer disks. The price has come down and there are some nice prices on some fine dual layer drives.

Now, this leads me to my question.... Could someone tell me please, is my way of doing this the preferred method? I am new to this too, and I have not yet used dual layer media. My burning is limited to single layer. I have great success with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter, so I'm familiar with those programs. made a few very nice back-ups with very little errors showing in my Plextools.

So if I could please hear from someone with more experience than me, I'd love to hear from you so I can call my brother and relay the info to him. He really would like to get all 65 episodes backed up to dvd +r's very soon. He did tell me that he can only fit three and one-half episides onto 1 disk; that is not too good, lol...... He was going to DVD Shrink them way, way down, but I told him that the quality would degrade too much... Any comments, please ?

    Many thanks !! Tommy

What format are the episodes in that are on his HDD? If ripped from a box set, I would backup the same episodes that are on each disc in reauthor mode. As you said with DVD Shrink, if he tries to put too much onto one disc the quality will be crap.

It depends on the length of the episode, if they are half hour then you can get at least 6 to 8 per disk, if hour then three is best four is pushing but can be done with advanced analysis and AEC quality setting of Max Smooth. Shrink is the best way to go but you will have no menu. Remember these are older TV files and the quality is not going to be that good to begin with so overcompressing will make it worse. I agree with LOCOENG backing up the same amount of episodes on the disk is the best way to go.

Good morning guys; thank you for the replies! I will have to call him to verify that, but I believe they are 30 minute episodes. I also have to ask him where they came from, lol.... I forgot to ask him that... Although I am not 100% positive, I think they might have been ripped from a box set. I'm also not sure what format they are presently in, darn it. I'll have to ask him quite a few questions.
Would you use dual layer on something of this project size?

DL discs aren't necessary and can make expensive coasters if experimenting. I would use SL media for these backups. I've put several episodic backups on SL blanks...all seasons of sopranos, deadwood, alias etc. with 3-4 episodes per disc.

Awesome; thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with me; I'm still a bit new to this myself. So when my brother calls me for help, it's kind of like "the blind leading the blind", lol.... But, were getting there.
I tell him to go with single layer then, and perhaps not shrink them down too, too much, anyways. Last I talked to him, he was going to buy a new burner anyways. I love my Plextor 716-A..... Not sure what he wants to spend though...
Thank you again guys. Arniebear, I think you'll remember me because you helped me out before.... couple months ago. I was trying to backup "Jaws". It came out perfect and with very, very few errors when checked with Plextools. I also set the booktype from DVD +R; to DVD Rom.
Awesome forum here... Wishing you all a great weekend!

I forgot... I'll hold off trying the dual layer, Locoeng... I am still trying to fine tune my single layer; not quite ready to make the jump to dual yet. My single layers are coming out perfect; so I am definitely making headway. You're right... expensive coaster!if I botch up those DL's. Many thanks my friends...

You can make the leap to dl, I have done several on my 716a and all are fine, just make sure your fw is up to date, current is 1.09. You should have no troubles :)
