my house has built in speakers for a 5.1 system am looking to update my old 5.1 reciver to something that has 3-4 hdmi inputs. only thing i can find that has that many hdmi inputs is a 7.1. so the question is will a 7.1 play in 5.1 with my current speakers or do i have to add 2 more speakers?
You can disable the back two speakers, in the receiver's setup menus, and it will do 5.1 just fine. If you're going to use a Blu ray player, you might want to get two more speakers and use the 7.1, because some blu ray movies are done in 7.1, and more are coming all the time.
