I tried to do this... Had AVI Files HIGH QUALITY on my Computer and I was told to use this... IMToo Mpeg Converter to convert .AVI to Mpeg-1 (720x480, 48000 Sample Rate, 29.97 fps, Bitrate 192 (audio) ) Then use TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 to make the DVD... I WISH TMPGEnc would be able to convert AVI's... I watched it on my DVD Player and it looked a little blurry but not bad... Why is it blurry?? It is High Quality on my computer it is straight off a DVD.
I'm not sure what you mean by "straight off a DVD" since you said you started with an AVI. If you're talking about the fact you put it on a DVD that doesn't mean anything. What matters is the quality of your MPEG encoder. If you want the best possible quality you need to use a good encoder like one made by TMPGEnc, MainConcept, Canopus, or Cinema Craft. There are also a couple of good free encoders - HC and QuEnc. Also, if you're encoding from an AVI it's most likely progressive. Instead of encoding to 29.97fps you'll get better results by encoding to 23.976fps and applying pulldown with DGPulldown. Even after all of this you may end up with an MPEG that's clearly inferior to the original AVI because I'm sure the AVI has a lower resolution than your DVD will so there will be resizing involved.
I have the ALI G Season 1 & 2 DVD but my Little Bro Trashed my DVD so they don't work on my computer or DVD Player... My friend took them and somehow he made ALL of the Episodes on the DVD Season 1 & 2 and they are ALL in .AVI's and they look awsome... So I tried to use IMTOO Mpeg Encoder to make the changes above... So please help..

If it's widescreen use 16:9. If it's fullscreen use 4:3. The square pixel thing is basically asking whether you're going to be viewing on a computer or not. Computer pixels are square, but TV pixels (or the equivalent space on an analog TV) are taller than they are wide. Using square pixels, a 16:9 image would change to 640x480 (not DVD compliant) instead of 720x480. Ideally you'd use the maximum DVD legal bitrate, but since you have to fit the movie on a disc you should find a bitrate calculator to tell you what bitrate to use. Make sure to encode variable bitrate and use the number from the bitrate calculator as your average. You should probably use something between 8,000 and 9,000 for the maximum.
I tried to make all my Videos 16:9...I used IMTOO Mpeg Converter to change one of my WMV movies because in TMPGEnc 3 Xpress I got an error message about 30% in that told me the sample rate is wrong...How do I change it in TMPGEnc 3 Xpress and What should the sample rate be??? I tried to use IMTOO Mpeg Converter but about 52% in it says complete and when I go to play the video the sound is off...I tried Virtual Dub 1.7 but no luck in splicing it dead on... Please Help

Vurbal I agree with you that 720 x 480 would give the best results but why do you say that 640 x 480 is not dvd compliant. Any dvd player will read 640 x 480 or even 544 x 480 found on dvr's. Sandman the reason you are not getting a good picture is because you are changing the resolution from 320 x 240 to 720 x 480. When you say that the picture looks good on your computer do you mean in full screen mode. Always look at the video in full screen mode to see what it will have the possibility of looking like on you tv.
While it's true that most (but not all) DVD players will play non-standard resolutions, not all of them will display them correctly. Some will add borders to make up the difference between the movie's resolution and the next biggest DVD compliant resolution. For a 320x240 I'd recommend resizing to 352x240 since that's DVD compliant. At that resolution you have the option of either encoding to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 (I'd go with MPEG-2). There's only so good you'll be able to make it since it's such a low resolution (less than 25% the number of pixels a standard commercial movie has). You can't pull detail out of thin air.
Ok, because I'm bored and want to help you put this problem to bed..once and for all. I've gone out and downloaded 5 WMV's from the internet. 3 are 320x240 and 2 are 352x240. All are WMV. I will now post screen shots and a quick walk thru of encoding these with both ImTOO, and TmpgEnc. But, since all I could find on short notice was PORN, I regret that I can't post screen shots of the actual video. But, the settings should be the same.
Ok, here are ImToo screen shots: this first is the properties for one of these WMV: Notice, that to meet the mpeg-2 standard the frame size must atleast be 352x240, your source is only 320x240 (1:1)VGA aspect ratio. So, don't change the aspect ratio(by stretching the horizontal) instead PAD the left & Right sides of the 320 with black video to make up the 352...get it(16+320+16=352) this will center and maintain the original aspect ratio but still give you a MPEG-2 video. here is first screen shot for using TMPEGenc: This last screen shot reveals a great advantage TMPGenc has over ImTOO, with the (1:1 VGA square pixel converted to NTSC(rectangular pixel( there would not be black at the top and bottom) But because we are keeping the original 1:1 resolution Tmpgenc is smart enought to make this adjustment for us...I'm not too sure exactly what the manual calculation would be to convert the square to NTSC to PAD top & bottom to adjust for this difference...so Tmpg gets another THUMBS Up! Ok, bye for now, tomorrow night I post the screen pics of trying to make a DVD with a 352x240 framesize. Some of my DVD authoring software will give WARNINGS, others will say NO. But, with such low resolution video source...blowing it up to 720x480 is un exceptable, and keeping it 320 or 352 centered in a ocean of black(720) and trying to view it on a 13in TV also is not practical....your only real option for DVD is 352x240, But you could always make a much better Super Video CD. Many new DVD players support WMV, Divx, also.

I must not have version 3.1, but I would assume: Zoom seems to be refering to a video arrange method: Letterbox is how you want a 16:9 to appear on a 4:3 tv, pan & scan is the crapy method to encode 16:9 for display on a 4:3, you don't have a 4:3 nor a 16:9 YET, and you are wanting to view on a 13in TV? correct? so you need to go with Full(keep aspect ratio) you want to end up with a 4:3. You just don't have enought quality or resolution to make a 16:9 WS, sorry. Split: seems to refer to spliting up a Movie? for various size Media, of those selections I'd go with the 4.7(DVD-5) to be safe. Anyone else have His version of ImToo encoder? have better ideas on settings? The audio sample rate (as instructed earlier by the Forum Mod) for a DVD it must be 48000. If you were making a SuperVidCD...then 44100. You don't have a choice(it's not Burger King) Note on FRAMERATE: sandman, if you already have 29.97 fps, you do not NEED to convert to 23.976...you would then need(2:3 pulldown) just to make it equal 29.976 fps....you're making it way to complicated. Now, if you have a 25fps video(you have PAL) now you need to go to 23.976(with 2:3 pulldown)+ time stretch audio OR use DGpulldown & leave the audio alone(except for making the sample rate 48000<--- which needs to be done reguardless.
This is actually a great idea...the 640x480....Sandman, you should try this and see if the resulting video quality is acceptable. What I would do is select custom size(center) the video....use a standard 720x480 video project template..so in the end you will have a 640x480 with black video on sides(making up the remainder of the 720). The 640x480 is proportional to the original(only 2x{with the exception of the conversion from square to NTSC pixels) So, there shouldn't be stretching out of proportion going on. It's another option to consider. there are DVD authoring software that will accept just a custom size(640x480) and add the black itself.
What About the BitRate in TMPGEnc... For the BitRate Setting for a video resolution: 352x240 Average Video Bitrate: ?? Audio Bitrate: 224 Estimated File Size: 1779.80 I was using the tutorial on the top...for the 352x240 Please help...This is One video...I converted it to MPEG-1 with IMTOO because Mpeg-2's aren't working with TMPGEnc... well I ran into a slight problem of my own Friday nite...I plugged my laptop into the outlet in my hotel room, went into the bath to shave and when I came out...my laptop was on fire along with my briefcase and paperwork, so I'm on a office pc for a couple minutes. Don't worry so much about the bitrate..both Imtoo and Tmpgenc have automatic settings for that, your a/v sync problem might be due to you trying to convert from a 25fps to NTSC framerate? You need to find out what your source video framerate is...and report back....most of this thread is concerning Mpeg encoding and really belongs in that forum. You posted else where you have quiet a few authoring software including DVDLabPro2...you shouldn't be having this much trouble making a DVD(of some kind).
