    Hi, check your jumper configurtion on the 80Gb.

    It should give you a guide on top, but one of the options on maxtor is cap limit to 36GB (I think 36), change it to slave, maybe no jumper, i forget.

    Should sort it for you.

    Hope it helps.

    Yes check the jumper config. All drives have a certain spot that will limit the capacity or tell it what it is ie slave or master. Double check....if not then you probally have it formatted in fat 32 instead of ntfs. Use partion magic...it will tell you what it is. It may also be you didnt format the entire drive...happens sometime. Thats why I like magic...you can see everything thats going on.

    Its a proggy that will allow you to do anything you want with a hardrive. Partion it...fix errors...check for errors. It has a graphical interface so you can litteraly see if theres a section that isnt formated and missing according to windows. It will also tell you the minute you boot it up if there is errors in the drive. It also works on more than one drive...if you got a bunch in your system..

    http://www.partition-magic-download.com/

    Try it....its good. My neighbor has a mysterious bird that comes round and gives him free "things"...

    So he sold me a copy of it and I absolutely love it....If this dont work then most likely the jumpers are wrong and you need to check them very good...

    and i decide to wait if somebody had the same experience and got it fixed in an easy way.

    Theres no easy way. You most likely have the jumpers wrong or the file table has errors...which you would need magic to fix them. Worst case secnario is the drive is bad, but I doubt it.

    diagram of jumpers (exact diagram of a seagate I have lying round)

    :::=slave

    ::J=master or single drive

    :J:=cable select

    :JJ master with ata no compatible slave

    (j=jumper)

    Get the idea? Look carefully at the diagram on the drive and configure the jumper for master or whatever your trying to do. There will also be a jumper for limting to 32 gigs. These Jumpers settings are on a seagate 1 gig out of a webtv, but all drives will have their jumper settings listed on the drive. Follow the pic on your drive since these jumpers are probaly different than a maxtor and set it accordingly. If its going to be a primary drive...then set it for master with no limitation.

    The only other possibility I can think of is it is a older comp and the bios cant handle over a certain size. So since you have a total of 120 between the two...it may not be able to read it and it is lowering the number. But I really feel its the jumper settings. Most drives have a jumper to limit their size since like I said some older comps cant handle over a given size. And usually that magic number is 35...which your gettin. :>

    If your running a Maxtor drive as a slave just take off the jumper totally and it will default to slave....

    Now it could be a bios thing but if your running a 40gb as your main drive then i dont see why it should not read any higher, because if its reading a 40gb then i dont see the board having the limitations...

    You could (and should) go to maxtor's web site and download there Maxtor Powermax tool, pop it onto a floppy and boot... You can then do a 90 second scan then a full sector scan... If it fault it will tell you and give you an error code....

    You can download powermax from here:

    Then if the powermax didnt solve the problem...pull the drive out and recheck the jumpers. Thats it. Its either jumpers or bad drive. I doubt its bad...so its definetly the jumpers. :>

    Yeah i agree with ozzy, check the jumper... Take it off totally as you want to run it as a slave (saves you putting it on wrong)....

    If powermax scan showed no problems, try a low level format with powermax (could take about 30 mins for an 80Gb)

    Usually if you can't format over 31 gigs then it is a FAT32 problem. FAT32 has problems with partitions over that size. The other thing that it could be is some versions of the Award BIOS wouldn't recognize drives that use more than 65535 cylinders so it wouldn't format larger than 31 gigs.
    ddp already suggested formating as NTFS, that is more than likely the problem. You will need to go into fdisk first and delete the fat32 partition then recreate it as a larger size. Then reformat it as NTFS. You might be able to do it by running compmgmt.msc from within Windows too. I am thinking that you tried NTFS as ddp suggested, but didn't delete the partition first, so you only reformatted the 32gig partition that was already created with NTFS instead of changing the partition size too.

    See some references off this page:

    you guys were right about the jumpers settings..a just had to go to this maxtor site and see the settings they show everthing...i had to take the jumper out of the drive that way it ll be a slave.thanks again.Maxtor and Quantum® Jumper Settings

    Please match the back of your drive to one of the "Styles" below to find the correct jumper settings.

    Note: If you are unable to match your drive to one of the "Styles" below please visit the Product Index Page and select your drive model. The jumper information is in the Technical Specifications drop-down menu under Quick Specs.
