I hae this issue all the time (My Job). So I have used most 8* burners and lots of different media. I think it is basically the way it used to be when 4* first appeared, the quality of disks is hit an miss.

DVD players are VERY picky when it comes to playing DVD's that play fine in DVDRom's - My Pioneer for example 10/10 will not play a DVD that is burned on an NEC drive - regardless of what speed they are burned at - have used +/-R and really expensive Ritek disks burned at 2* and still refuse to play.

Have had the most success using 8* burns with Pioneer 107 and good branded media.

Other than that I will usually burn at 4* to make sure - or at least till the media gets better.
