So I'm definitely new to this whole thing, and one of my friends decided to start me off on Gordian Knot. I've tried using it, and so far I can get the general hang of it, but I'm having a few issues with some DVDs.

Specifically, here is what's going on:

Star Wars Ep. 3: The encoding goes great, as long as I don't include the first VOB file. If I do and the encoder is finished, I test the file and it's switching languages at the beginning, which in turn is throwing off the audio! I can't figure out what to do to resolve this issue.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The first VOB file for the main movie appears to contain the movie trailer, which is fine and all. However, when I'm done encoding this and go to test it out, the audio track is off. I checked it more and it appears to be because of the freakin' trailer that is attached to it in the beginning.

I am using DGIndex to prepare the VOBS, but like I said I'm a certifiable noob when it comes to this stuff.

    Any help?

Heard of Gordian Knot, but not familiar with it.

Try ripping to HDD first using DVDFab Decrypter...get it here free: http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

Then pick your audio and subtitle streams and transcode with DVD Shrink...it's free, get it here: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/software.htm

And finally burn with Imgburn, its free get it here: http://www.imgburn.com

This is a really simple procedure.

Give DVDFab a source (the DVD you want to rip), then give it a target (your HDD). Once the files are on your HDD open DVD Shrink and open the VIDEO_TS folder created by DVDFab. If you don't care about the menus and special features as much as you do about quality, choose Reauthor mode. Double click on the Main movie selection on the right in order to move it to the left...open the compression tab and remove all audio except AC3 5.1 and any or all subtitles you don't need. Hit backup, under target choose ISO image file and then OK. When the transcoding is finished open the ISO in Imgburn, insert blank and burn away.

Iv used Gordian Knot to convert from AVI to DVD but never have used it to acctully backup a DVD. How long does it take you to backup a DVD with the program?

I would suggest checking out DVD-RB/CCE if your looking for good quility backups. It takes a little longer then DVD Shrink or Nero Recode2 due to it encoding the DVD instead of transcoding it but the quility is hands down better with DVD-RB/CCE.

Sorry for the extremely long reply, guys. I figured it out after someone mentioned DVDShrink.

Turns out, when I tried decrypting the full DVD and then attempted to encode it through GK, DGIndex used all three angle setups from the VOB files, which it then tried to incorporate into the movie (hence the changing of languages).

Once I shrunk it then re-encrypted it, it came out perfectly. Now all I need to do is figure out a way to get some really goto quality out of it.

    Thanks again, guys!

What kind of player are you using? I know someone with this exact problem on ROTS, yet on my newer machine the disc plays fine and doesn't do the switching between english and spanish during the opening scroll. If your player is old, or junk that may be whats causing this.

I've only tested the files on the PC only before going to disc. I've never put them to disc and tried it in a DVD player until I saw the result on my computer.
