I got the A+ for dummies book, pretty easy to understand and not too dry. Never went to get the cert though oh well... Check for vouchers for the exams, I think you can get the tests at a reduced price. I went to school with a guy who found vouchers on ebay I believe.
I think it's pretty easy, they're offering free courses online so I was thinking to make this a useful summer.
if it's free go for it. I've seen some courses for certs that cost a bunch of money, so I'd definitely take advantage of that.

It's been 10 years or more since I did it so my knowledge may be dated, it was still mostly Windows 3.1 questions for the Windows portion then. From what I remember it was fairly simple, the Dummies book or any certification series would probably suffice. There wasn't any books or guides when I took it years ago so I can't really say which would be the best. The most difficult part for me was the laser printers, knowing all the steps but that was because I hadn't worked much on the hardware. The next question is what did I get out of it? Really nobody looked at the A+ certification, it was mainly a prerequisite for getting vendor certifications at the time. IBM and Compaq required A+ to be able to take any of their exams. The employers that I talked to were much more interested in my MCSE and later Cisco CCNA/CCNP/CCDP than anything to do with the vendor certs I had received in the past, which was the only reason I took the A+.
