I recently purchased a Motorola RAZR V3, the Cosmic Blue colored one. I was wondering what does it mean to unlock a phone? And what info do I need to give people so that they can give me a code to unlock the phone. And 1 last question, I recorded a sound clip, is there a way to set it as my ringtone?

Unlocking means to allow it to use a different SIM card in your phone, people make a big deal about it, but unless you travel alot there really isn't any other advantage to doing it. Also, there is no info that you can give to get your phone unlocked, the ways to do it are to pay a website to do it over the internet, to give your provider a sob story and have them do it, to buy a phone clip, or to download a program that will unlock it. But really if it you don't have a good reason to do it don't bother. And one more answer, if you select the sound clip in the audio menu then press the menu button, one of the options says apply as ringtone.

Hi Q4i...I have a razr v3 that I want to use but it asks for that subsidy lock code. It did not come from my cingular provider but I want to be able to just take the sim from my current crappy cell (with cingular) and stick it in this razr and use it. Can you help?
    Thanks in advance.

In order for you to use the SIM card from another provider you must first unlock the phone. Each provider locks the phone to their own service. There are a few methods for unlocking the phone, first and probably the easiest is to go to a web site that provides an unlocking service, such as GSMLiberty, you pay them about $25 and they unlock your phone over the internet. Second, call up the phone's original provider (or maybe your current one?)and give them a sob story so that they will unlock it. Third, there is a computer program that will unlock your phone available on the web, try the motorola hacker's bible sticky at the top of the motorola forum or motomodders.net, however this program only works with a specific version of bootloader so you might have to downgrade your bootloader also. This kind of mod can be somewhat dangerous and carries the risk of bricking your phone. Fourth, you can invest in a device called a phone clip that will unlock your phone, they run about $200 but, you can charge others to unlock their phones and recoup the cost. The other thing about using a phone from a different provider is that it's internet connectivity won't work so you'll have to change the program that does that by uploading a carrier specific monster pack to your phone. I hope this helps you out, if you have other questions please don't be afraid to ask.
