this was being discussed on the IRC channel and i thought it might be a good idea to show support for it in here. would it be a possibilty to excude the safety valve from the weekly charts? alot of people find it as a way to make useless and or double posts alot, and i was wondering if some people use it to increase their post count. Since the safety vale is not relative to helping people, why would it be included in weekly charts. someone could post 1000 times a week in the safety valve but if none of those posts were to anyone's benefit, what good are they and why would they need ot be included in someone's post tally? just a thought.

Sounds like a good idea, but I've actually wondered this further than that -- little votebar for each post and only reg'd users can vote and obviously not their own posts. So, "normal" post would be counted once, but would be multiplied by the vote average :)

Thats cool too dRD, actually it would be good too if u make it so that only that ip address can vote once, just in case! lol

What about someone like me who has a dynamic IP address that changes quite often if i log off? Also, I was thinking that in the safety valve, maybe your first reply to a particular thread should be counted and the rest not?? Out of curiosity, how many posts have i made? I would have no idea at all :)

    Cheers

since we all have to log in, what would the IP address matter? I suppose it's really an issue of the content of the posts, like if they make sense, if they help anyone, or if they are just useless babble. the first post counting idea would be good, but what if the first post is something stupid like "yeah he's right' or whatever. there has to be a way to regulate the crazy posting that has been going on lately.

Yeah, its not really needed anyway. Most people dont really pay much attention to it. I've hit number 1 once, that'll do :)

yeah that would be a good idea, we dont need a competition among ourselves anyway. i've never hit #2 even i dont think, and I'd rather have 5 good posts that help people out, than 500 posts that do nothing but take up space and time.

I agree on that one. Maybe it is an incentive for people to overpost?? im not sure. I post what i want to post, whether there will be a poll or not, so it wont be changing my pattern. My main aim is to help people and to read how others have helped people. That way, i find, is the best way to learn about a particular topic.

I think it might be a good idea to drop the top ten list for postings because, i think i've hit 6th or higher but I never have the time to notice or frankly, care. i'm usually too busy posting somewhere! Having users vote-in posts will probably become a hassle. Just a thought. :)

At the end of the day i agree. WHo really cares in the end. It only take 50 posts or something to get from Newbie to Junior. It only takes another 50 to get to Member i think. After that the boss and admin/mods decide whether they want to make you a Senior member or addict, so posting loads doesnt get you anywhere. Its quality that counts. I post qutie a lot in the Safety valve on a range of things, and i enjoy it. I also post tonnes in the DVD related forums. Im not posting in Safety valve to get my number of posts up, it really doesnt matter how many you have once you get over a certain number. I post there out of fun or enjoyment.

Not really sure what to do with the safety valve issue, except look carefull at members post history to see if a large portion of their posts were 'good' ones before making them a senior member or addict. Well thats my two cents!

Well, my current aim is 10,000 posts. I currently have, i dunno about 7000, which is a bit mad really i must admit aswell when u think that i never bothered much with the safety valve, just love encoding lol!

As for the safety valve, ad_buddies will be starting a thread with no specific topic, (we were plannin on it for weeks so no we're not copying any ideas lol) but we are gonna change the topic every few days or whenever it seems to be dying just to see how many posts we can pack into 1 thread in a certain amount of time! lol that will be interesting! lol

I've been really just slacking lately on the forum! lol well ive been busy but i really just had no interest in posting. However over the next few weeks i'll surprise u all with a few new things, like guides that i have to finish up. Which reminds me dRD, i still need to find an image dump lol! The emule tutorial is not being updated till i find one! lol ;-)

Darthnip btw, how will we sport out an IRC guide? I will write just a small one to show ppl how to connect to channels but im gopna need u whenever ur not busy to write a guide containing everything :)

This coming from the only small time poster on this thread.

I also believe dropping the status but it can hurt too!
lets say someone like me tries to give advice and its wrong, the person taking the advice assumes i know what im doing and messes up completely
maybe if you keep a label on people who are established as being knowledgeable because i know i like to take advice of the people on here who know their stuff and some people will only know that if the smart guys have a good label
    do you see my point?

I see what your getting at, but it is hard to categorise people into certain topics, ie 'knows his shit', and 'doesnt know his shit', which is really what the suggestion would imply.

Gotta love all those big decisions. For what its worth i think it may be a good thing to perhaps raise the number of lower levels up a bit so that starting users would be perhaps more enticed to post and yada yada but after a certain point leave it like it is with sr/addicts. I suggest this just because Newbie, Jr, Member seems kinda like a short life hehe. Just a thought.

I completely agree with that. I think there should maybe even be a star system for member and below. ie; Newbie gets 1 star, after 25 posts, gets a second star and goes to Junior. Juniors can then get 3 more stars up to say 200 posts before they become a member. Members get a rating of 1-5 stars, maybe a different colour to the Juniors. Senior Members are Red 5 stars.
