    I got this drive for christmas and having a problem also. I can use DVDxCopy fine....ulead fine...but whenever i try to just burn data with a program like Nero, my computer locks up.

    I have it set on master, and have the latest firmware for it.

    any ideas?

    What type of DVD media are you attempting to burn to? If you are using a cheaper generic media this could likely be your problem. My Sony DRU-500AX locked my computer up also on one perticular type of media. So, the first thing I would try would be the media type, and also make sure it is compatible with the drive (dvd+ or -). If that doesnt work then I or someone else could tell you how to flash (update your firmware) your dvd drive. Although I would be very cautious when updating the drive firmware, or you could scrap the entire drive. Just let us know. Good luck.

    Do this real quick to check your firmware version, go to this link and download this little program. run it and let us know what version firmware you are using. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

    Firmware is 1.7

    Media is ritek, which works fine. Ive tried some more expensive media, and got the same results from locking up with nero.

    Basically, i just wanna be able to burn as data. So i'm not hardwired for nero.

    Try RecordNow Max, get it from here:

    NOTE: UNINSTALL Nero AND ASPI FIRST.
    Re-Start
    Install RecordNow
    Re-Start
    test etc...

    If you want, after RecordNow has been installed and configured, you can install Nero again (it should not interfere with the px-engine, if it does there is some poorly software on your system).

    I've exchanged several emails with Nero tech support on a number of problems. In all cases the problems have been resolved by running the Nero Clean Tool and installing latest versions. In fact this is almost becoming standard practice for me whenever I upgrade.
