I just soldered the wires for a viper chip, still haven't finished putting the GC back together or actually connecting all the new stuff with the viper yet, working on it now. Anyway, I'm going to burn an image file of a GC game so I can test a burn. For ps2, I just use alcohol 120% and burn. 1 out of every 20-30 is a coaster and usually if I just reburn at the slowest speed with absolutely no processes running it works fine. Should I do the same here for GC games?
Gah forget the dvd question, the gamecube gives me no sound/picture. Do I have to do anything to the card before playing? or did I probably muck up one of the solders?
So, is anyone around? Could really use someone lol. I actually do have the gamecube screen come up after messing with the solders, but instantly get "An error has occurred". I'm kind of lost here, any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.
If you have a viper chip, make sure the chip is turned on, the serial programmer attatched to the flat cable coming from the viper should be as well attatched, make sure the tiny switches are at ON position. -Pete
Guess I should spend more time working on it rather than posting. Gamecube comes on now but the burnt disc I made doesn't work, now that's a lot better than having problems with the system as a whole. I don't have an original disc on me this second so I'll have to wait till tomorrow to get one. Btw, what's on and what's off? I see the two tiny switches on the programmer serial port, and I assume what they were at IS the on position, but I don't see any -/O or on/off etc things on the plastic so I can't tell.
Oh, and in case you didn't... http://modthatcube.ngcdev.com/main.htm In the left sidebar, go to "Supplements", then "File Database", then scroll down to the Viper Loader and Viper Manual. Download both, and follow the instructions. The manual explains the install again (so you can make sure you soldered properly), tells you how to flash the chip, and shows you what both switches do (and what's on or off).
That's what I asked in my first post lol, do I have to flash the chip or does it come predone? Guess I'll get to that later then, thanks a lot guys. Really didn't want to see all that money go to waste, but I didn't think this was going to be impossibly hard. Otherwise I would have spent more to get it modded by a pro.
All right I flashed the chip, everything seems to be ok except one major problem, my controller doesn't work. I just bought the GC off EB online. I'll try a friend's controller tomorrrow. Anything else I should look at or try with the controller? =/
Controller's plugged, the whole front piece of the game cube has it's wire plugged and secured on the main motherboard of the GC. It just won't work.
I assume that the controller did work before? there might be a short somewhere what is causing something to ground, or the wire wich is attatched to the bios chip is grounding on the big heatsink top of it. you'r gc boot's that's ok and most likely you haven't fried anything.. yet.. would it be possible you to snap a picture of your install, and close picture of the bios chip and other solderpoints? that might help me to solve your problems.
Unfortunately, I took the road of being idiot. Didn't even TEST the GC because I was just excited to mod it. I would assume it worked before, hah, I mean EB usually won't send already damaged equipment but I can't be 100%. I'll get the digital camera and take some pictures later, thanks for the help. *Edit* Just rereading your post, "there might be a short somewhere what is causing something to ground, or the wire wich is attatched to the bios chip is grounding on the big heatsink top of ", the yellow one that I soldered onto the chip was a bit hard to do and it might be, that could be causing it? In any case, I'll get the pictures up in a bit. Thanks again.
Yes if the bios wire is grounded to the heatsink or there are solder splashes between the bioslegs the problems lies there!
I hope you still have the programmer attached... Use the manual to set the switches so the chip is in invisible mode or turned off. Then check if your controller works (hold A immediately after starting the Cube, and the GameCube logo should spin and enter the original system menu).
Turning the chip off does nothing different and god damn, my camera will NOT take a nonblurred/extremely bright image of this damn gamecube. I've tried all different angles, flash on/off, other light source on/off, the only good shot I have is like a foot away and you can barely even see the solder work.
*Edit* DISREGARD THE ENTIRE POST! GAMECUBE WORKS! Ok ok, everything is perfectly fine now. Now that I'm past the hard part worrying about the hardware, worrying about specific discs or backups will be a lot less aggravating. Thanks for the great help, I'll be ready to bug you guys with questions later. Thanks again!
