Hey gang, I have a question on how to access my networked PC via my xbox. I know how to FTP TO my xbox and place files from my PC to the XBOX, but I want to open my pictures, photos ect that are located on my PC. I have the stock drive in my modded xbox, and dont want to fill it up with all of my pics, and small movie clips. I have a 500Gb HD and I want to let it do all of the storage. I FTP via a wireless router, and my xbox is connected via a patch cable. I hope this information helps any input is helpful thanks gang, Sean
You need to install Xbox media center (XBMC). This turns your box into a full up media center allowing you to view pictures, play music and watch videos from your PC on the xbox. Do a search for XBMC and you'll find it. It's included with many of the installer packages such as AID. This assumes you have a soft or hard modded xbox. If you don't have a modded xbox, you might be able to do this some other way, but I don't know how.
Ooops, Sorry gang I forgot to mention that I am currently using the XBMC(Mod/w avalaunch/executer chip). I know the program a bit. I just cant find enough detailed information on how to configure My XbOx to access my PC files(pics, video clips ect. I need some guidance. Ihave tried the CDGui method and seems a bit complicated. I must be missing something somewhere. thanks, Sean
OK I'll try to recall this from memory. First, you make sure your PC video, picture, sound file folders are set up to allow network sharing. Then navigate in XMBC to My Videos, you'll then see a selection of XB drives, and some other paths. I think its called SMBC Network Shared. If it is the right one, your "My Network" will show up. Drill down to your PC, then select the right folder and file. If it is not the right selection, you'll end up with a blank screen. If you try to password protect your PC folders, it will simply add another layer of frustration. Your router's firewall should protect you anyway.
OK, I finally got it to work!!!!!! Here is what you have to do or how it worked for me: * First off I am using a MODDED/ With chip(EXECUTER-and AVALAUNCH) * This NOT an FTP Process. FTP is usually using a PC to enter and transfer files or download files to your XBOX or when you are ripping a game to create a back up on your PC. * make sure can send files to xbox VIA FTP, this means your PC is talking and interacting(Sending or recieving files. Close any FTP-ing programs. * On your PC make sure you have enabled file sharing all the way around. For me this meant sharing the C: drive, then selecting the exact folder within the C: drive and sharing this one also. In my case I wanted to share my "MEDIA FOLDER". My Media folder contains all of my PC based Music, photos, videos. I selected to share this specific folder and have other PC's on my network (in my house only) see, access the information in my "MEDIA FOLDER" * Lastly go to your Xbox media cener (XBMC)and go to the picture, video or music selector on you XBMC. Once here you shold see a variety of drives. One being E, G, F, and the variety of others. * If you set your PC up correctly once you are in XBMC Video,Pictures or music, you should see a ICON or TITLE name that is called " XBMSP Network Servers (Auto-Discover) * Select this drive (Press A on controller)and this should take you to a second screen. This the "Server Screen" In this screen you should see your PC's IP address "192.***.***.*.***( and your PC's shared network name. Select this( Press A) and this should enter you the the next screen, all of the shared files and folders. * If you like you could rename this Drive/Icon for easier identification each time you visit. *Lastly you have to go to each menu Video within XBMC, Pics, Video, Music, to see this drive and open it to check that you can access your newly shared drive from each menu. This has worked great for me. Now I dont have to buy a larger HD for XBOX, as I can run all of my media VIA my XBOX. Please note you CAN NOT, as far as I know run games from you PC on your XBOX. Good luck, Sean

Some more information: Play with the triggers, buttons and switches on your controller to see how it acts as a remote while playing a video. For instance, the 4 way cross plate will very quickly move the play cursor to a location in the movie for quick jumps while pressing the right and left triggers proportionally fast forwards or rewinds the video anywhere from 2X to 32X. This only works smoothly when playing videos on the HD, but you can still do some things over a networked storage system. I don't personally have a TiVo, but I've heard you can use the Xbox to play TiVo recordings over your network also. I personally like big HD's on the xbox to store all the games and not have to wait for the slow DVD load up times (as well as wearing out the DVD player) $80 for a 300GB HD is well worth it. Have fun.
I tried the above instructions to see my pc hard drive through XBMC. I think I need to make some changes to my XBMC network settings. Does anyone know how to setup the XBMC network?
tell us what you are working with, before asking us questions. We need to know where you are @, what system you are using, location, ect. Please read my post to see how through I was. I hope this helps are you are looking for info. thanks, Sean
I'm using an executor 3 / avalaunch system. I can FTP without problems through a DHCP router via LAN or wireless. I have the firewall for the router disabled. In xbmc, the weather info works. When I try to access my home pc via the (smb)workgroup, however, I get an Icon, but "invalid computer name" shows up. I tried to go to the network settings in xbmc and put my computer name in, but I didn't see a proper place for it. I'm pretty sure xbmc is not configured right, but I have not figured out what it needs to know yet. I am also confused on which IP address it needs, and where to enter it. Do I use the IP for my router, or LAN adapter? My dash uses DHCP settings, and I selected DHCP in xbmc too.
First of all, keep your router's firewall ON. Otherwise the computers on your network will be visible to anyone on the internet. Keeping it on leaves computers on your LAN visible to each other, but invisible to outsiders. Next, make sure the folder(s) that you want the Xbox to use are set up to allow sharing on your network. Right click on the folder and choose properties, then select the sharing tab (if you're using XP) and allow sharing. Your XBMC box should now see the folder with your vids, music or pictures.
Here is where my problem was.... I had MAC filtering enabled on my router. Once I put my xbox MAC address in it, things worked fine. Thanks for the help. This forum is invaluable!
Hi, my problem is similar to slipnseans but a few things differ. I have no mod-chip installed but i do have XBMC. I also have an upgraded 160GB Maxtor HDD installed. When I first got it, i could network my XBOX to my router and it would pick up the shared files on my PC instantly with no trouble. Since then I have re-formatted my PC and have set-up my network settings again (the same). It now no longer works even though I have followed this forum AND my old settings exactly. I can still connect to it using FLashFXP but when I try to view my shared files by going 'My Videos'>'WORKGROUP(SMB)Network', it simply throws up a Dialog Box entitled 'Remote Share' and says 'Workgroup not found'. I have checked the Workgroups are the same on both my Pc and my XBox and it still does not work. Can anyone help me? Any replies gladly accepted, Thanks, Jack,
Did you manually change the properties in your PC folders to allow them to be shared? Unless you "cloned" your upgraded drive (not recommended, a clean reinstall of Windows and everything is better), you will have to go back and change the properties of your movie, picture, music, etc. folders to allow sharing.
I think I have but as my new version of Windows is a 'tweaked' version, it sort of sets everything up for me, so could you explain how to do what you mentioned, because I am a bit baffled?!? Thanks, Jack
Make up a folder in your computer and call it Test. Stick a .JPG picture into the foler. Right click on the "Test" folder and select "Properties" Select the "Sharing" tab and click on the "Share this folder" radio button. Launch XBMC on your xbox click on "pictues" go to WORKGROUP(SMB)NETWORK Your Home network should then show up, select it. Your computer should then show up with whatever folders you allow for sharing. Click on the "Test" directory Click on the picture file you stuck into the foler. If it shows up, great, if not, there is something not set up right in your network settings. You might try changing the firewall settings on your PC, just make sure it is left in your router. I can access my PC files with my xbox even though the PC's firewall is on, I simply allow access within my home network.
