If you want to watch the movie with subtitles, you'll need to download vobsub. After that subtitles are viewed automatically when playing with mediaplayer, but the subtitle files must have the same name as the movie (for example movie.avi, movie.sub, movie.idx).

If you want to sort of integrate the subtitles to a movie, then you'll need both virtualdub and vobsub. Make sure you install the virtualdub filter, when you install vobsub.

Just install it and play the movie with mediaplayer. Subtitles work automatically, when the filenames are same and they are in the same folder.

VLC supports VOBSub's out of the box.
