Hello, Note we are talking the old xbox that came out in 2000. On my first xbox, I added usb ports. I removed controller ports 3 and 4 for, and wired female usb header to it. Worked great. It was already softmodded when I added the ports. Now (a couple years later), I picked up an old xbox, and would like to do the same. I wired it up, and I am sure I have the usb header wired correctly. I have not softmodded this box yet. I navigate to the memory section of the dash board, and insert a usb drive the screen slowly flickers, and it never really sees the usb drive. I tried an 8GB patriot drive, and a usb sd card reader, with the same results. I wired red<->red, green<->green, black<->black, white<->white, and left the yellow dangling with a piece of tape over the end. I also grounded the shielding of the usb cable to the frame of the xbox, as at first I thought maybe it was grounding out. Is this the sign of an incompatible usb flash drive, or do I have the header wired in wrong? Is there anyway to tell if I have the header wired in correctly using a multimeter? Thanks, ~S
no need to rewire anything just get an adaptor or two & plug it in as for usb drive the only one that i have of two that gets recognized is a "kingston 4gb data traveler G2" as for the card reader i'd be suprised if that worked not that i've ever tried one it just seems odd since it was way after the xbox was made where would the drivers come from.
Yeah the card reader didn't entirely surprise me. Though the computer just sees it as a USB mass storage device so I thought it might work. The 8GB flash doesn't entirely surprise me either as there was nothing that big back in the day. What sort of behavior do you see when you insert an unsupported USB flash drive? Do you see the flickering I speak of? I am going to try and get my hands on an old USB flash drive and see if I have any more luck with that. ~S
Yeah my 8gb imation won't work either chances are all 4gb drives work if you can borrow one it'll soon tell you,as for kingston device itself it works flawlessly, at first xbmc says data device not recognized when it's first plugged in then it changes to recognized only issue is it can only be read & not written too, other than that it stays connected till removed
Yeah, I tried to post in original xbox forum, but it says it is closed. Ok, I am going to pick up a 4GB drive and see how that goes. ~S
Tried the 4GB Patriot, and same issue. I am going to try and hunt down an older usb memory stick and see if that helps. I went back and tested all my connections with a multimeter, and I am pretty damn sure I have it wired correctly. So I'll try a few more thumbdrives before I give up. Thanks, ~S
