    Recently purchased ADSTech DVDXpress.

Direct to Disk feature seems to work fine to copy entire VHS
tape to DVD but I want to burn to DVD only selected portions
    of VHS family videos.

Captured several clips from tape and saved to hard drive as
    .MPG files.
Burned .MPG files to DVD-R disk but disk will not play on
    DVD player.

What am I doing wrong ?
Won't .MPG burned to DVD play on DVD ?
    Your assistance is appreciated.

You can Not Burn Mpeg files to a DVD and expect them to Play in your DVD player because DVD"s have a Specific File Structure and without that file Structure your DVD player can not Read the DVD...
Mpeg files have to be "Authored" to DVD useing a "DVD authoring" program which Formats the Mpeg files and any menu"s or Cahpters into a "Video_TS" folder which Contains the File structure and then you just Burn the "Video_TS" folder to DVD in "DVD Video" mode useing a Burning program like Nero....

You will need a DVD Authoring program Like "Tmpgenc DVD Author" or for more Complex DVD"s try "MediaChance DVDLab Pro" which will let you add menu"s and Chapters to your Movie and it will format it into a "Video_TS" folder and then Burn it to DVD For you or you can Burn it to DVD yourself useing any Burning program....

You might also want to get a Mpeg editor so you can Edit out the parts you don"t want and Keep the parts you do want and to save your edited File as a new Mpeg-2 file which you then author to DVD....

There are a Couple Freeware Mpeg-2 editors out there Like "Cuttermaran" or "Chopper XP" or a Good Non freeware editor is "Womble Mpeg2VCR" or "Womble Mpeg Video Wizard 2005"....

    Cheers
