I am trying to get the image from Age of the Empires 2 with Alcohol 120% so I can just play it on my virtual drive. I can't figure out what kind of a disk it is, if it is a normal cd, general protected cd, safe disk 1, safe disk 2, or any of those. does anyone know the type of disk that that game is or any program or way to find out what it is? I use XP

Tsk tsk tsk, you did not read the main thread. Should you have read the 'How to backup protect CD' you would have know how to identify it.
Open the image with a proper application (isobuster, CDMage, mount in Alcohol) an look at the files.
Read here how to detect the protection:

Ok, thanks, i found out, using that link that it is a SafeDisk 1 because it has the 00000001.tmp thing, now when i use Alcohol 120% to copy the image onto my computer (in an MDF file type) it gives me Disk read errors and I know that the disk does not have any scratches if that is what it means. it goes extremely slow, after about 15 minutes it is only at 3.0 megabytes and it only takes about 10 minutes for me to rip my other games in that format to my computer! What am i doing wrong?

You are not doing anything wrong, but did you check for 0000002.tmp?

If that file is on the Cd it will be SafeDisc 2.

Also you just may be using to many system resources.

I do not see it anywhere when i browse through the CD, also, what do you mean by system resources?

Well you should try using the search tool in windows to find the .tmp file.
System resources are how much your RAM and Processor are being used if you have low system resources your PC will run slower also space and how much your Hard Drive is fragmented also affectes this.

it doesn't have the 00000002.tmp on it, i searched manually for it and i let windows search for it but it was not found!!! When you say the system resources, do you think it will work better if i dont have other programs going like kazaa and AIM and other programs like that? I defragmented my hard drive so that it goes faster but it still goes realy slow and it gives me tons of disk read errors!!

Alcohol 'Safedisc' setting (both 1 and 2) automtically set 'Skip reading errors' and 'Fast skip error blocks' to speed extraction. If you extract slowly, he problem lies in the CD-ROM unit.

You can enhance the speed, sometimes, by extracting with the CD-RW unit (that is: using the burner as reader). Did you try that trick?

Ok, it definitly works better when i use the CD-RW instead of the CD-ROM, i tryed it without the skip disk read errors and it stoped after about 3 seconds, what file should i be writing it to? a MDF, BIN/CUE??? or the CloneCD one? it goes much faster when i use the CD-RW but it doesnt use much of the CPU, so it says. All it does is show disk read errors constantly, like 2 per 5 second approximately! Thanks for all the help!!!!!!

Since Safedisc does not hide protection in the Subchannel data, MDS or CloneCD are not necessary (these are formats which store .SUB info).

I would suggest CDRWin (.CUE/.BIN) or CloneCD format, just for higher compatibility (these are the most popular formats).

About CPU/System resources: ripping is slow because due to the unreadable sectors on the disk. There is no data to be processed that needs CPU time.
This is simply an I/O access problem (like when you connect to a network and the connection is unavailable/slow) and is solved by the 'Fast error skip' option.

does this mean I can ignore the disk read errors???

When reading any image of Safedisc, it is common for read errors. The Safedisc cd protection lies "usually" within the 1st 10,000-13,000 sectors of the Safedisc protected cd. IGNORE the read errors when backing up Safedisc.

    Shoey :)
