Has anyone tried different DVD copy software to compare the quality of the copied movie? Do they all copy EXACTLY like the origina? If not, which one click prog should I not touch and which would you recommend? Im looking at 1Click DVD copy, AoA, DVD COpy3,DVD2One. I tried 1Click trial, bad compression compared to AoA, but is there anything better than AoA. Afterdawn has good things to say about Clone2 but why was 1Click quality (for DVD5) better? yet you say 1Click is crap. Anyway, i need good compression and stable/reliable slpit.help pls.
when you back up an original & have to compress the files then you will lose quality. you can use dvd dual layer discs so there is no need to compress. apparently dvd rebuilder gives the best quality if you have to compress, (i do not use dvd rebuilder but this is what i have read) as for what programs to use you have several options - both free & not free. dvd shrink is a good free compresion program. clone dvd is also good but is not free. i usually compress my dvds as i only have a smaller tv & do not notice the quality loss. if you have or intend to get in the future a big screen tv then you are better off to use dual layer discs so the quality remains the same.
In my experience if you are backing up childrens or less critical material that is going to be viewed on 25" crt sets or smaller you can go between 70-80percent video quality and not be that bothered by it. However I can see a definite difference on a 65" RP hdtv on any video quality under 100 percent. Depends what you want to burnand use it for. I just got a D/L burner so I can have a choice.
I used Magic DVD Copier a few weeks ago to backup a couple of my DVD movies. I have a 40"Sony LCD and the copy was great, really good quality IMO. Included all the trailers and menus aswell so I would imagine the quality would have been even better had I left them out. Really easy to use and overrides copy protection also if I remember right. Have a look, see what u think - www.magicdvdripper.com
Don't let percentages fool you with compression. Look at the length of the movie vs. the size of the video. I have compressed movies to 70% that look far better than movie that were not compressed. The reason being you have some companies (Sony) that lower the bitrate to about 1/3 quality. I would assume the reason would be to make Blue Ray look much better than a DVD... As for the program to pick, you cannot go wrong with freeware. While you can get better results with DVD RB + CCE, that combo will cost $70 to $2000!!! I have done some comparisons to CloneDVD2 and it appears the DVD Shrink is better. I have seen some movies where the difference is obvious and some where they are about the same. I would say that for movies movie that require lots of compression DVD Shrink will be better and for others they are about equal. Nero Recode is about equal to DVD Shrink (Recode is basically an updated Shrink, just a different name). Recode is much faster though, but to get good quality, you must use HQ Slow recording and Advanced Anlaysis. I have not tried any of the other software mentioned by the others.
I just want an easy/reliable 1 or 2 click prog that produces perfect quality for split. And the best prog for compression in term of copy quality. Shrink is not for me tho it's free. I am not so smart and do not have the time to experiment. I am looking at 1 Click but get diff views like bbmayo says it's crap etc so would appreciate someone REALLY has compared the actual prog of 1ClickDVD. Clone DVD II does a split but shaky with animated movies. Will try DVD magic tonight.

DL disk is out of the question Cost $30 in my country You guys sure there's no any 1 or 2 click software that can do as good a job or better than Shrink?can bbmayo tell me why you said in 2004 1Click is crap
"@ gil2002 thxs i didn't know you could use DL disc & not lose Quality i just hope that my burned work with DL disc i have a HP lightscribe burner will this one work with DL disc.I guess you live and learn new things everyday..." For FYI I just started really backing up movies since January or so. (Tired of kids ruining discs) Last week I put a DRU-810a dual/double layer burner (60bux) in my aging 1.8mz desktop and was able to sucessfully backup 2 dl movies with it so far no problems. On memorsux dvd+rw dl discs (I know guys I read your posts I have 25 VERBATIMS on the way from nooegg but I only wanted to buy a few to test out this drive). I used DVDdcrptr in ISO read mode and then ISO write mode (Already had nero 6 installed) and even though I got some wierd messages with saw2 (dummy sectors detected, will replace ? something like that) It plays fine in 3 out of 4 dvd players so far.
Actually I mentioned RB to cynn in another thread. Seems one thread wasn't enough. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3/306508 That's about one of 4 or five on the same subject, transcoders. I'd suggest limiting the discussion to one thread before getting into trouble for multiple posting. Jaguargod RB can be used for free with the HC encoder, which is about as good as CCE, just a bit slower. http://www.dvd-rb.com/ That's about the best quality that can be attained with freeware. As for the retail version, the Basic CCE works well and a small donation buys the RB Pro, which is worth it. The $2000 dollar version is for those who already have SP or picked up a good copy at auction prices. So for about the $70 you mentioned (give or take) a person can have one of the best and easiest apps available for doing backups. Once set up, it is one click and easy. I believe I also mentioned deleting 1Click because it did a poor job. I guess what one likes in video output may depend somewhat on the equipment one is viewing the video on. Big screens have a tendency to show more flaws. I tried to explain to you that the only time you have a true copy is when you do 1 to 1 copies. That's out for you I guess due to the cost of DLs in your country. The other option is splitting the files to separate DVDs. Most movies can be done with movie only to improve the compression and what is lost is negligible. Shrink is an easy freeware app and does a good job, especially when using the Quality Settings. I hear Recode is a work by the same author, but retail. If you're wanting a software that is both an easy tool to use for transcoding as well as splitting a movie to multiple discs, then DVDCopy4 from InterVideo is hard to beat. http://www.InterVideo.com/ It also processes various file types and records to both CD and DVD in different formats. For flexibility, I've not seen better.
