i was able to read and write using dvd+rw with no problems. now it does not identify rw discs. i am using Verbatim's data life - dvd-rw. Nero identifies the dics as dvd-r... not dvd+/- rw.

i had problems with Nero before - i am not sure what it was but this problem of not reading +/- RW, occurred after a fresh re-install of Nero. (i used Nero's clean tool to uninstall.)

any good suggestion what to do? thanks

If these are new disks you could just need a firmware upgrade for your DVD burner.
    What's your burner make/model?

Hmmm there are no new firmware updates for this drive...
This is however a laptop dvd drive and could just be the laser is dieing on you. Have you tried reading/burning dvd+r or dvd-r?
How long have you had laptop?

    thanks ripper,
i think i found the answer. i will explain.

in late june i purchased a top quality dvd - rw brand. it was highly recommended. i did not want any problems. so i bought it - 2 packs of tens.

that particular brand worked for the 2-3 times i used it. after about 6 weeks i was having problems reading/writing.. i reinstalled nero twice thinking it was one thing or another. i even checked the ones i already used.

finally a friend emailed me about checking the quality of the DVD. i disregarded it- cause that brand was highly recommended. from my friend, i even rec'd another report about that brand. it was not as great as i thought but still good.

i even checked your idea about the burner's firmware update and that was not it either. i was hoping to hear from you- just in case i was wrong.

anyway this morning, i decided to check the entire batch of dvd-rw discs. i used nero's tools and dvd info pro (trial)of the remaining 17-18 discs. to my shock over 10 were no good.

now i am starting to think that i might have bought a bad batch but it is also possible they were a faked brand. but who knows for sure. but today i bought a Sony DVD-RW stack. i will check it out later just for double checking.

the brand i bought was -Verbatim's Data Life DVD- RW.

anyway many thanks for your help and thoughtfulness.

Ah ok so turns out to be a bad batch of media. Hmmm if they were "Verbs" then I can only think you got fakes. How much were they and from where?
Sony are a good make, but I don't know lots about RW disks as I am an +r/-r fan myself. And also for things like films r disks hold data for longer.

Anyway glad it's all good now, Happy Burning!

i checked my records, in mid june i purchased the Verbatim at- SuperMediaStore.com
i also bought yuden dvd-r from them and no problem- but then i have only used it once or twice. i may have to check this out as well.
you can be sure i will not be using this store again. can you recommend a good source?
