My computer knowledge when it comes to MB's and CPU's is very tiny. I really don't know anything about this stuff, but heres the deal. I recently installed my CPU AMD 2800/333 Athlon XP Barton R

I'm getting this information from the order sheet where I got the cpu. (My cousin ordered and installed the part for me)

Now my cousin told me that with this processor I should be running at speeds around 2.4 ghz, 2.6 ghz. He didn't know exactly because he was just speaking with me over the phone and had no information with him since the box and what not is all at my house. Im not sure if the Ghz is shown on the box or what not...Um on my own however I downloaded this nifty AMD clock, which shows my speed, 1200 Mhz. I told my cousin this is what it said, and he said that this wasn't right, and the processor should be running at greater speeds.

So I was browsing through this site and came across Overclocking and what not, and I dont really know anything about it, but is overclocking what i'm supposed to do ? My cousin was mentioning things about changing the bios features ? If you need any more imformation to help me out go ahead and ask what you need, but in the mean time any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks

you should be running at about twice that speed, 2400 MHz or 2.4 GHz. when you go to your bios and see the settings for your chips speed, are you sure you see it set to 333 and not something like 300 or 266? i'm not sure what the actual numbers on your chip should be, but you should be able to adjust some stuff there.

Alright after checking out the bios I made a note of a few things I seen in the advanced chipset.

    System Performance: Optimal
    CPU Ratio : Default
    Fsb Frequency : 100 Mhz
    Memory Frequency : By SPD

Alright these are the top four items.

Also under FSB Freq was, 133, 166, 200.

Now from here it makes the most sense to up the FSB freq to a higher number. Well which should i move it up to. Also do I change anything else in the chipset, if there are any other catergories you want to see please make a post and ill get on it.

200 would double your speed, but i'm not sure if that is what your chip is meant to run at. if that's too fast, you'd need a good cooling system and hardware to enable the overclocking.

do you have the exact specs on your chip? or a manual or anything? you should be able to find the specific brand of chip (Thoroughbred or Clawhammer or something weird like that), it's model number, rated speed, and fsb. i'd start at 133 and go up from there, seeing what your speed reaches. report back with results if you can and good luck :D

    *edit*
DAMN i feel like an idiot. i just noticed the "barton" in your first post. i'll have your fsb in just a sec :)

all right, DO NOT DO A 200 MHZ FSB! you'll probably fry your chip right now. just wanted to warn you.

from what i've found, it's either 133 MHz or 166 MHz. you should be operating at 2.083GHz, so i'm thinking it's 166. try them both and see which gives you that GHz. (i don't know your multiplier or anything else, so i can only really guees)

to summarize: LOL start with 133 MHz. if you're getting less than 2.083 GHz (probably around 1600 MHz), then up it to 166. good luck and hope you report back soon.

Alright at 166, I am getting 2.1 ghz 2079 according to the Computer Management screen. Alright seems to be doing alot better. Now is there anything else I should be concerned about, anything else that I need to change or...anything at all ?

i think you're good to go. do a search for Everest home edition and Motherboard Monitor. download them both, see what your system temperatures are, and see how your system is stability-wise. hope to see a response tomorrow. i'm off for now.

What motherboard is the cpu installed on. You should be able to go to their and see what the fsb should be.
