I have burned about 200 movies using the advice on this website. I always use quality media (such as TY) and I always burned slowly (4x). I just bought a new dvd burner (NEC ND-3550A Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Beige Burner(which can burn at 16X). My question is this, should I still burn at 4x or can I increase my burns using dvd shrink and dvd decrypter up to 6x or 8x? Again, I never burn coasters, but it would be nice to cut my time down when backing up movies, since I do 3-5 per week.
I have the same drive as you and I recently (this week) have tried some faster burns. I used Taiyo Yudens DVD+R's 8x and burned at 8x. Scan quality score was .93 not the best, but far from unacceptable. Cheers.
I have a burner that does 16 but I never burn faster then 6, i would rather have a good burn then a bad one, besides its not worth me chancing it, at 6 it burns in about 5 minutes give or take, I have done about 1,000 burns this way using TY and not 1 coaster
i used to have a 4x burner and then i upgraded to a liteon 16x....i honestly burn most of my dvds at 16x now and i dont have any problems....i cant seem to get my burner to burn at 4x for some reason...i have tried to change my speed in my burners properties but if i want to burn at a slower rate then i have to manually do it in nero....but other than that i have had no problems burning at 16x and 8x but other people will probably disagree with me on that......
a few years ago when 4 x discs were the only disc available and it was suggested to burn at 2 x and now that 8 x are available it is being suggested to burn at 4 x and now 16 x discs are available with 4 x still being suggested the burn speed . i dont and have not followed this advice though . i burn all of my taiyo yudens at 8 x with no problems and high quality scores . my question is , when is the suggested burn speed ever going to up with all these faster discs available now ? in my opinion there is nothing wrong with burning at 8 x . i have and many others have had great results burning at 8 x . it just seems like the suggested burn speed is stuck at 4 x and it isnt going up even with faster discs now . we are not suggesting 2 x on 4 x discs anymore here . the suggested burn speed went up to 4 x when 6x and 8 x discs became available but it hasnt been suggested any higher even though we have faster discs now .
This may sound like a silly question, but how do I check the scan quality score? (The 95's that 9mm alluded to).
CD/DVDSpeed, KProbe, or DVDInfo if your drive is supported... What brand/model drive do you have? These are random scans. I don't believe in scanning disc after disc to find the best scan/burn. I like a true measure of consistency from random discs... I scan every now and then to see how my setup is performing, and then I just trust in my procedure... I won't scan anymore until I update firmwares... EDIT*** All those scans are from inkjet printable media...
i've always advocated 4x because provided everything's set up right burns'll work at 4x consistently for evermore, plus i tend to be replying to endless posts that are victims of burn problems. however it's true that many ppl have good success with 8x. i draw the line at 16x though my LG 4163B will do 8x most of the time (though my 4167B can't/won't do 8x) and i only use top notch 'Verbatim TY' now, but i tend to end up doing 4x as it's worked for me for like 2000 flawless burns/playback. My philosophy is to get ppl burning, and burning consistently, then the onus is on them to ramp up the speed to 8x when they're happy with the stability of 4x burns.. My 4163B turned one of my sexy Verb TY's into a useless coaster so i find it less annoying to just go back to 4x. Each to the own though
