    Hi,

I bought an HP computer from a retail store on 1/04 with the extended service plan. The hard drive has failed with a S.M.A.R.T. error message. I returned the computer for repairs. They replaced the original hard drive, Maxtor 160GB Ultra ATA133 (DiamondMax Plus9 6Y160P0), for a Seagate 160GB Ultra ATA100 (Barracuda 7200.7 Plus ST3160023A). I didn't notice that it was replaced for UATA 100 until I got home. Is it a big difference from the UATA100 and UATA133? Should I make a big fuss about it? I went back and they said it really shouldn't be a noticable diffrence and would be at least 3-4 weeks before they could work on it again. I do video encoding and editing sometimes. What should I do? Thanks

Not a big difference no, but nonethless you will see a slight difference. If it was me I would take it back and bitch and moan till they gave me the right hardrive..i.e. udma133. Thats what ya paid for and thats what should be there.

    :>

When will I see the bigest difference and how much? The reason I ask is because they told the computer will be gone for about 3-4 weeks. I can't go that long without my main computer. I guess I could but it would be a long 3-4 weeks. Thanks for all the help.

do this but talk to store 1st in that you'll use present drive til they get new ata 133 drive than ghost present drive onto new drive & fdisk & format present drive.

During encoding and ripping. Loading a game or a program..etc

Just tell them to give you the hard drive and that you will install it yourself. Problem solved. All it is is two plugs and a bunch of philip screws. Make sure to have the jumper set right and ya good to go.:>

Surely a 100 drive transfers at 100Mb/sec, whilst a 133 transfers at 133Mb/sec. That is a 33% decrease in performance. That is a lot in my book. If I had paid for a 133, I would want a 133, not a 100. My Raptor (SATA RAID) is a 150Mb/sec, I notice a hell of a difference in loading times. Saying that, it is a 10,000rpm as opposed to a 7200rpm, so I get a double whammy boost!

    [bold]MARVELLOUS!!![/bold]

(I'd wager a small squirrel that if you say anything they will tell you there is little or no difference. I would kick up a stink if they begin to get awkward!)
