So, im thinking of buying a new computer instead of building my own so i checked out the local Frys. This guy tried to sell me an AMD 64bit 3300+ HP system.. he said it was better than the sony vaio 3ghz w/ht.. is that true? Are 64 bit AMDs better than P4 w/HT? thanks inadvance!
try getting a clone system instead of a namebrand system as better upgradability & not propriatory like some namebrand systems. what are you going to use the computer for??
I didn't know there was a 3300... i thought it went from 3200 to 3400. But yes imo AMD athlon64 is better than a P4. AMD processors are slower in GHz but get more done per clock cycle- about 30% or so more actually. a 3300+ athlon64 will be about as good as a P4 3.3ghz- hence the model name. I was going to go with an HP... but I was convinced to build my own. Since you don't want to build (it's cheaper, why not?), you might want to do what ddp said with the clone system... I'm assuming that's just something made by a smaller company to the specs of a certain name brand computer for cheaper??
Frys has good parts and crap ones as well. Some of the people there are helpful but most just want to go home and collect their check on payday. So if you decide to build you own you will need to go in armed with knowledge or they could talk you into crap parts really quick. As far as P-4 goes they have been added to may ban list due to those sell out INTEL people putting DRM in the firmware and chose not to tell anyone. The current P-4 have DRM but you will see no documentation on it and the FRY guys will know nothing about it. AMD GHz to GHZ smokes intel away no questions asked. Im not saying AMD 3300 runs the same as a P-4 3.3. I know the 3200 runs at 2.5GHZ compared to Intel's 3.2 GHZ. So if AMD had a processor that ran at 3.2 GHZ and it raced a P-4 3.2 GHZ the AMD would be at the finish before the P-4 even took a step. Yes P-4 is slightly better at multitasking but not enough to get excited about. Heck when I am making DVDs I have about 5 programs running at the same time processing different parts of the flick. The computer runs just as good as if nothing was running. So Intel can blow me. But for real. You will have a better system if you build it yourself. Oh yeah one more thing. Intel has crappy HT (A big joke. turn it off and your computer will speed up) AMD has Hyper transport. Although the AMD does not fake 2 processors the hyper transport is somewhat similar to HT. The 64 part is really doing nothing for you at the moment. So no real benefit to having it besides the fact the 64 chips are much better than the other 2. When a real 64 bit OS comes out then the 64 part will be of use. Hope this helps. I know DDP wants to comment on this. -Del
