Which one is better? One is better at the other at some specific things, however, if overclocking, heat produced, energy wasted, etc are not of the concern; which one is faster at pure calculations? Does one work with games better than the other?
they are close, i would guess that you wouldnt notice the difference in normal usage. the thing is the e6300 is the better upgrade path. if you get the e6300 when the prices drop you can get a e6600 or quad core cpu, which are better than the 5000+ or fx cpus. i would get a c2d at the min not a x2. the e6300 is up against the 3800 x2, and is slightly better. the e6400 is up against the 4200 x2, and is slightly better.

One graphics card will not interact with a CPU in any different way from any other GPU, so answering the question 'which CPU works better with games', with is not answering the question at all. Facts are that certain CPUs are better for gaming applications that others. Not all game play performance is down to the GPU, it is also heavily dependant on what CPU you have and also what memory you have. The list can go on, about what ... other parts you have, but you see the picture. Putting an 8800GTX in a crap spec system is not going to give you the ultimate gaming platform. As this whole debate is about the E6300 and the 4200X2 then we should get the facts correct. The E6300 is 1.86GHZ The 4200x2 is 2.2GHZ Now where I come from that makes the 4200X2 faster than the E6300. How well it performs is another matter. But that comes down to architecture and efficiency not speed. People need to make statements that are accurate and informative, not just chuck in comments that add nothing to the thread. Anyone logging onto AD to see what is written, should be able to get enough information that is clearly laid out to help them. A lot of users, come here for reliable advise not just banter. I'll mention no names on the following point (Now or later): But people should not alter their thread replies in such a way, as to change what they said totally if they have been found wanting in the knowledge department, they should be ‘man or women’ enough to admit if they make mistakes.
I agree with you BigDK.... I have given advice that has been proven to be in error, and, rather than edit my post to change my answer; I annotated the correct answer/statement after my "errant" post. Most of the time, though; if I am not absolutely sure of the answer/advice that I am contributing- I preface my response so that whoever is looking knows that up front or I just don't post at all.

I don't know which 2 mobos you are debating between, but the Gigabyte 965P S3 (which I use with my E6400) is a proven performer with plenty of support....

I'm looking for the cheapest mobo possible (preferably by ASUS). I think that I will choose the Core 2 Duo with 4 GB RAM over the X2 with 8 GB. I don't think that there is a mobo out there [at the price I want] [still being sold] that has what I want (PCI Express 16x, at least 4 GB of RAM, Core 2 Duo socket, LAN (doesn't have to be GIGABIT LAN), and a built-in sound card) other than this one.

Thanks, but, I have now decided to wait until the Core 2 Duo (E6300) reaches the present price of the 805! According to my calculations, that will come true in approximately 8 months! For those who want to save money [like me] here's something you should know: If you are in school [or anything similar] and have a decent CPU, stick to it until your summer break (or something) arrives [which is when you will really use it]. If you're power hungry and money is of a slight concern, go for the E6400 or even a E6600! If money is of no concern whatsoever; why not buy the most expensive quad core?! P.S. I can't wait to get my hands on a Core 2 Duo! I will also upgrade my video card and RAM while I am at it! P.S. I also can't wait for the newer "Half-life'"s and "Halo 2" (PC versions obviously) but, that's besides the point.
