Ok, havent been around in a bit, and this has no doubt been covered loads. Basically here's my dilema:

Buying all new PC system, spending about £1400 on components. I have to try and decide between the following processors:

    Intel P4 LGA775 64Bit 3.8GHZ (800FSB) at £410
    AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego 90nm (Socket 939) at £350

What is the clock speed of the AMD, i believe its somewhere around 2.6GHZ. Can Someone explaint to me how the 2.6GHz processor, or whatever it is, can compete with a 3.8GHZ Intel? The AMD San Diego ones, in car terms, are more highly tuned i believe?

Aim to match it to the following, though this is for the AMD motherboard and chip setup. Any and all opinions suggestions welcome:

    - Memory: £176 inc VAT
    Crucial 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2 PC5300 667MHz Ballistix Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT6464AA664) (MY-035-CR)

    - Case: £60 inc VAT
OcUK Value Fusion Case With 300w PSU (CA-004-OK)

    - Power Supply: £47 inc VAT
Akasa Ultra Quiet 400W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.0 PSU - Black Nickel (CA-012-AK)

    - Monitor: £311 inc VAT
    Benq FP91E 19" LCD Monitor - Silver (MO-011-BQ)

    - DVDRW: £46 inc VAT
    Pioneer DVR-109XL 16 x 16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter - (Limited Edition Brushed Aluminium) OEM (CD-026-PO)

    - Graphics: £177 inc VAT
    HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X800 ICEQII TURBO 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (RX800-ICEQ) (GX-030-HT)

    - Hard Drive: £100 inc VAT
    Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 NCQ 250GB 6B250SO SATA 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-021-MD)

    - Motherboard: £73 inc VAT
    Gigabyte K8NF-9 nForce4 (Socket 939) PCI Express Motherboard (MB-032-GI)

    - Keyboard/Mouse: £35 inc VAT
Logitech Cordless Optical Desktop Rechargeable Black/Silver - OEM (KB-058-LG)

    Thanks
    Chris

Im getting it from http://www.overclockers.co.uk - as far as im aware, its probably the best place in the UK to get it.

Here's some interesting graphs on processors i just found on resolutions of 1600x1200 using Half Life 2 and a top Video Card:

    The big Daddy Processors:

    Main Stream Processors:

All porcessors compared comparitively together below. I think this gives a very good selling point to the AMD 64 Bit 4000+ (considering the one im getting isnt the Clawhammer, but the more highly tuned San Diego version). Is the right choice then for me - the AMD 64Bit 4000+ San Diego?

    Thanks

Clock speed hasn't been an accurate measurment of real world speed in a few years now. AMD released the Athlon XP chips based on their Quantispeed architechture in 2001. What this did was increase the number of instructions that the chip could process per clock cycle, more or less making clock speed not an accurate measurement of true performance.

What you did above is really what you need to look at. Check the benchmarks and use that as a comparison rather than just a number they slap on the chip. I also find it depends on the game or application. I have found Intel usually better for video encoding and general purpose stuff, and AMD better for games, but even then there is exceptions. For instance Quake 3 and UT 2004 usually benchmark a little better on Intel, while Serious Sam is much faster on AMD. One surprise was Comanche 4, coming in way faster on Intel.

Cheers for the info on the clock speed. Im heading towards the AMB Athlon 64bit 4000+ because of its price and of course its performance. I dont think ill buy the Intel, ive seen a few other benchmark testing and the results arent pretty good in comparison to its AMD equivalent. In fact, sin some cases, the Athlon 64bit 3200+ is out performing Intel P4 64bit 3.6GHz and 3.8GHz

    Cheers

Ayup Chris long time no hear..............

    Hows everything going?

Just regarding your potential order with overclockers, I haven't checked the prices thoroughly, but I have an overclockers local to me and I find their prices can be a little high.

you can also check these out aswell.

    http://www.planetmicro.co.uk

    Happy shopping.......

BTW, I prefer Intel all the way, afterall AMD are now copying Intels fully covered heatsinked core.

Personally I think you would be better with the Intel, no real reason, just I think they are more stable across the board.
But either one, I think will kick some real ass........LOL

    Catch you later............

Hey mate, how you been keeping. Thigs going fine with me, been busy with uni, busy with g/f, busy on holidays all over the place and busy being broke. Apart from that though, not much happening. Appreciate your input as always. I, like you have always been a big Intel fan (and no...not a cooling fan) but after reading quite a lot of info on the AMD 64bit processors, they really do seem to be kicking the asses of the Intel eqivalents. Even the one im gonna get, the AMD Athlon 64Bit 4000+ kicks the ass of the top of the ranges Intels, neer mind the FX55 processor.

I'll try AMD this time, and if in a few years, Intel get their act together, ill maybe convert back lol.

I have been searching the web, and the overclo9ckers price seems to be good. However, im now, as you suggested, going to try and get similar spec prices from the places you mentioned.

    Cheers
    Chris

P.S. Hope all is well in the Kingdom of the sheep ;-)

lol - sure sounds like a dumb-ass thing to do. Nearly as dumb as me lighting the barbeque and setting the box of matches on the middle of it, walking off and coming back to found them on fire....well doh...my girlfriend and her parents were seriously worried about ym intelligence lol

    Glad everythings ok mate ;-)
