An Odd DVD Harddrive Problem

I'll start out by explaining how this happened. I come home from school and play Command and Conquer: First Decade (DVD ROM). I go to bed, come home again from school, turn the PC on and the drive suddenly reads no disks at all, neither DVD nor PC. I have tried reinstalling hard drive drivers and IDE controller drivers, i've removed the hard drive and cleaned the lense and still no luck. I would try a system restore but that disk is on DVD so i can't do that to my knowledge. My DVD drive is a Sony DVD-ROM DDU1613. If anyone can help I thank you for your time.

I've checked the device manager many times there are no exclamation points or anything.

It certainly couldn't hurt to do system restore. To two days back, before you played the game and it worked. System restore does NOT require a disk to run! There is probably nothing wrong with you Game,DVD disk.

Could the fact that my DVD drive is for some reason the slave and the CD-RW is the master drive cause problems?

You'll have to set the jumpers in the back of those drives accordingly. End of the primary cable to MOBO and primary Master drive/middle connector as primary slave / cable select-depending on your pc configuration. Same applies to secondary.

First: Make sure all connections are correct, connectors matched up to the drives as for slave/master/or cable select. That's why you want just the sony dvd-rom drive on the end of the secondary ribbon, and the pins set to master-making it secondary master. Leave the cd-rw drive out for now.

I'd go into device manager under dvd/cd-rom drives, open up the tree, double click that sony dvd rom drive/click drivers tab/uninstall/and reboot. See if it'll read dvds and cds.

    How's your pc configured?

    Mine's:

    Primary master- main hd
Primary slave- spare 200 gb hd
    Primary Master- HP 640c dvd-rw
    Primary slave- Benq 1650 dvd-rw

Your bios screen, upon bootup should tell you your configuration.

Nero infotool/configuration will also tell you

Your main harddrive should be primary master, anything hooked up to the middle connector of that ide ribbon-will be primary slave or c/s

The other ide ribbon,is the secondary. Outer connector is secondary master/middle connector is secondary slave or c/s.

Jumper pins have to be set to how you have the drives configured. Ends of cables-mobo and master drive. Middle connectors- slave or c/s-depending on what the manufacturer of your pc calls for.
