Basenco-i HeAr that my friend ! I went sunday to my local BestBUY and by Local I mean 30+ miles away 1 way ! and they had only 1 50Ct. spindle of the Verbatims left ! And this was the 1st day of the sale too! Getting help was an exercise in frustration ! I looked in the CDR/DVD media section and also walked around the store Just in case they had put them on an endcap or in a different area as they sometimes do ! In desperation I went to The Customer service desk and the Lady working there said that the Computer /cash register shows 2 spindles total in the store ! Being I wanted to buy atleast 4 to use up my BestBuy gift card ! I thanked her and left ( WASTED TRIP ) but I did learn something from it ! You can Go to BestBUY.com and locate the Item on sale and then look up if they have it in stock @ that particular store ! saving Gas , sanity and wear and tear on the Vehicle ! and as of today my local store is still out ! ArrrrrrrrGGGGGhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! According to the website anyways ! Just thought Inquiring Minds would like to know ! Look before you leave ! That's going to be my motto from now on ! Good Luck and Happy Hunting Basenco
Well I just went over to best buy and they had zero.... I grabbed the newspaper with the Verbatim's showing the sale on them. Went over to OfficeMax and they had about 18 cases. I grabbed 3 of them and showed them the paper and they did the price match. Awesome...... Quick question.... This is my first time burning my dvd's with a Philips DVD8801 and I'm going to be using DVDFab Plantinum. What speed should I burn at? I will be using the VSO Burning Engine DVD Writable Media it's set to 4300.... should I increase it to more? Thank you.... Cheers
Whenever you go to Best Buy and they are out of a sale item . . GET A RAIN CHECK!! A rain check is good for a long time and you can use it when there are no sales going on . . . I forgot to mention when I was at Best Buy, they were short staffed and one of the guys wanted to me to hang around while he finished with a customer. I was like see ya! Talk about Bait and Switch tactics!
Basenco- Yup that's about what they did to me except ! it was a young lady that so called waited on me ! Ironically the particular BESTBUY I was at was anything but shorthanded or understaffed they were practically Tripping over each other ! And it seemed like they were going out of their way to avoid doing anything useful ? I'll wait They Have to put sony's or Verbatims on sale again eventualy & if I'm lucky and all the planets align perfectly and I hold my mouth just right ! They may actually have them in stock this time ?

Yeah, picked up a 50 pack of -R's myself( had about a total of 3 left on the shelf). I was thrown off by the new outside label. The outside label of these -R's is now bright orange & blue. Not the original white & blue like before. outside looks cheapy looking , maybe Verbatim is cutting some cost ? Don't care just as long as they don't cut costs on their actual media itself. Got a question. I was thinking about buying some DVD +/-RW media to mess around with, so that I could back something up on it then erase it to put something else on it later. Which is most compatible w/ standalone players ? Also can it be booktyped to -R ?
DVD+R, +RW and +R DL can ONLY be booktyped to DVD-ROM Why you would want to booktype a disc to DVD-R, I don't know . . . As far as standalone compatability . . DVD-ROM seems to lead the pack with an occasional exception. If your standalone player is reasonably new it will, most likely, play DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL & DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL booktyped to DVD-ROM as well as SVCD and VCD . . . My two Philips players will play anything round with a hole in the middle (except for bagels and doughnuts)
Bad choice of words on my part, sorry. I meant booktype to DVD-Rom. Where can I find say a 5 or 10 pk. Of descent -RW media, really cheap so that I could experiment with ????
RW formats can be trickier. Great to practice and play around with.Just like +R DL,booktype them if possible. I've never gotten a hold any -RW but non booktyped +RW definitely gave me compatability issues. Main reason I only use booktyping capable drives. My -R backups definitely have a little more trouble on picky stand alone players. Edit: I missed the bottom line: Office Depot has Maxell RW media on sale, 25 pk for $9.99. They also have a Mid week sale going on with their regular weekly sale. They had their own OD RW's on sale for that price last week.
Thanks for the info Saugmon. So which media would be better to get the +RW or the -RW , for standalone players ?? My 2 standalone's are #1 an OPPO OPDV971H , which shows on the outside box that it does play both formats. DVD Player #2 is a Terapin TT-2600DVD which is about 4 years old. Both are Region Free , if that even matters.
It's hard telling what your dvd players will play. You can't go by specs. I've helped dozens of people here who's specs on their dvd players said they would and would not play a certain format. That's why bookktyping is a huge asset. Take the dash format. Dash backups from my Q's would not play on my dad's sherwood player. My older brother brought one of his dash backups over for the holiday. That sherwood player played my bro's dash backup. That's why picky players may be sensitive to certain MID coded media, certain format, certain burn speed, certain burn engine, and even certain burners. I've seen them all. By booktyping, you help increase the stand alone player compatability rate. That's why I'd get the +RW. But if very few drives are going to play those backups, dash may OK as well. Many drives, booktype them. Few drives, less likely the need to booktype.
The whole reason that people here recommend using the better discs and not burning them too fast; is that the better media burned at no more than ½ the media's rated speed and booktyped, will yield the best results . . . We don't just say this, we've experienced this! I use Verbatim DVD+R 16x media almost exclusively and, with any of my writers, haven't had a coaster since I can't remember when . . . Victor
catfreak & saugmon Thanks for all your input. I primarily use Verbatim media. I may go w/ the +RW & have it booktyped to DVD-Rom. I'm pretty sure that my Oppo will play the RW w/ no problems . It's the other one that I have in my bedroom that I'm not sure about. Wouldn't mind getting another cheap player that will play it. I wonder if I could find one for about $30 ?
I had a cheap apex player that wouldn't play +rw from my tv recorder, but did play the same +rw backups that my benq 1620 produced. Nothing's guaranteed when it comes to reading dvd backups. After the +R and -R,the compatability rate drops on the rest. BTW Bigtoxy: Sony's on sale tomorrow at Staple's, $23 per 100 pk.
saugmon- I appreciate the heads up O' Pugnacious Purveyor of pollywogian Varmint dancing !!! { and no I'm not going to say that 3 times fast either!!!} But we have no StaPles Here !!!!! Just the usual BestBUY ,CircuitCity, & officedepot ! other than Wallyworld & the like ! so Thanx again Lil'green Buddy !!! I guess I'll see what tomorrow brings in the way of sales ? I May pick upsome maxells at OfficeDepot tomorrow if they turn out to be Riteks or Ricoh's By the Product code? I wonder if my Local BestBuy will actaully have their media in stock this time ? I'll deffinetly check online 1st before I make that 30+ mile trip again! Well Watch out for Flipper Blisters & keep on dancin' Later !!!
