Could you guys tell me a good program to convert any video file(mainly mpeg and mpeg2) to avi. I've tried some but they make the quality of the video go way down. I wanna use the one anime encoders use. They basically convert into avi without any loss of quality and is compressed well. Any help would be appreciated.
u will have quality loss because of compression. there are many apps out there. try filepedia.com or do a google search. have u tried nero or dr. divx. both of these are easy to find.
The encoders you speak of probably use VirtualDubMod for encoding with AVISynth to frameserve for filtering (denoise, add hard subs, etc.). For an app that can convert basically anything to avi, you really can't go past mencoder.
I'm pretty sure you're referring to the huffy codec. It's lossless but it makes avi's which are slightly smaller than those with no compression. To convert a video file to a huffy avi (or DivX/Xvid if you want), I use Virtualdub all the way. You can get the official version from http://www.virtualdub.org/ I use the modded version for better file support which you can get from http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/ 1. Open a video file up in virtualdub. 2. Choose Save as and export as an avi. Name the video file and choose the codec you want to use. (huffy for lossless). You can also choose to put compression on the audio by going to "Streams" before you choose save as.
