I'm using the 2 programs to backup some of my DVDs and got this message on CloneDVD:

    E:/Video_TS/VTS_06_1.VOB:read error
The system cannot read from the specified device. If reading the media has failed, please clean the surface and try again.

Any idea what's going on? This only happened with my Star Wars III and Indiana Jones DVDs. Thanks for the help!

make sure both are the most current versions

make sure you have to most up to date firmware for you're optical drive.

most likely to problem is the DVDs are scratched/dirty or bad causing the transcoding read errors. you can try to clean them or use other programs to transcode with

Versions and firmware are both up to date...Indy is brand new, Star Wars had a few small scratches through.

Intervideo DVD Copy 6 transcodes about anything try the free trial

    http://apps.corel.com/lp/ivi/index.html

you will need to run anydvd behind it like you do with clonedvd

also you could try using the anydvd ripper ripping the movie to your HDD first then use clonedvd to transcode

could be your optical drive too, some brands have problems transcoding certain movies. what brand is it? can you try a different drive to transcode?

I've had NOTHING but problems with SATA DVD-RW in a NEW XPS Dell 630i. I have a phillipsLite-on 16X and a Lite-On 20X and as of tonite a Sony/NEC optiarc SATA also that work with less than 40% of my dvd burning programs. Clone DVD doesn't work even tho it says the disc is written. They are trying to help. The USB external drive I've got is working on ALL programs I use. Dell has been no help. I talked with atechie for 2 1/2 hr at Dell-he had control of my pc-he blamethe programs-It's bull $hit. It's the set of the SATA drive AND SATA motherboard that casuing end of disc not being performed. Wait as these new XPS are bought more problems will be encountered.JM2C! You know of anyone else having this problem? PM me

Edit: Slysoft is being VERY helpful and I think they and I know it's the pc set up and not their products. AnyDVD and CLOneDVD work like clockwork on USB drive. And thats where this optiarc drive is going -USB enclosure.

    @Zoso

I did consider a custom build but $300 difference was not in custom build's favor. The pc excellent except it doesn't close DVD with certain programs. SATA and program conflict somewhere and no one can figure it out.

    garmoon, yes i understand

my opinion is the preloaded software that comes with box systems cause the problems.

it would be interesting to reformat the HDD wiping it clean and install you're own windows XP/Vista and see if you have the same problems

Be glad too. I spent 2.5 hr on phone with their tech. he tried his best. He took control of my pc and basically I showed him how none of the SATA DVD RW drives were working properly with some burning software, he being able to see my monitor in the Philippines. Dell has been accommodating thus far. Whether I get that tech out here will be interesting. As I see it this pc XPS 630i is not functioning properly. Changing drives hasn't help. I've amassed 2 more Liteys one an optiarc to go along with original phillips Litey (POS no support). They all work the same-so I know the drives are functioning. They all burn a disc BUT some programs get errored out when trying to close the disc. DVFabPlat with it set to burn with Nero is working, not with Fab burn program. I just upgraded and they ask if you want to install their VSO engine??

No one has had any answers and I've seen no related problems with this pc on forums. The best DRM available -hell if I coiuld figure out how to sell it to MGM I'd retire tomorrow. LMAO

this may sound dumb, but do you have vista on that dell????i know there is alot of problems with vista and some of our burning programs..

i have that LH-20A1S litey and it has burnt with every program out there and at every speed possible.

sorry to get off topic here.

as Zoso(happy b-day) said you might wanna clean the disc. ive had some new disc right out of the store never been touched wouldnt rip until i cleaned them once. try getting you some of the gel hand cleaner smear it all over the disc then rinse it off and try to rip it.. works 99% of the time for me.

Just to add a little to Cincyrob's advice...when you wipe the disc clean wipe away from the center to the edge.

Or maybe i'm just anal retentive. :)

Yeah zoso but you didn't tell me what software was causing the problem. You get half credit. And how do you explain there was no conflict with USB external burner? HUH? LMAO

I'm a long-term user of 'Corporate' type pc's ie Compaq, Dell etc. They can be great machines, i always make sure to wipe the corporate bloatware off and reload my own OS, whether it's Windows or Linux, never had trouble with them once they've been wiped.

I have a couple SATA burners and they work great as long as not bith used at the same time, but that's only due to me buying a cheap and not very good PCIe SATA card, couldn't find a decent one at the time (i get around the problem for now by not burning with those 2 drives at the same time).
..all my (internal) hard drives on that machine are nice SATA-II drives and the performance is only affected when anything connected to that cheapy PCIe card is being accessed. I just need to get around to buying a decent controller card sometime.

Thanks for info Creaky, but right now I'm not real competent with wiping HDD and installing an operating system over. I know it's not that hard but now I would void a warranty with Dell. I now have another XP machine to play around with and install it's op system over. Besides the urgency to get another XP machine and NOT Vista, prevented me from building one myself. That is my goal one day. I think I could install all the hardware with no trouble with proper instructions. It looks like complicated Erector Set inside and I excelled at that toy.

I have since found out from yesterday that AnyDVD is also part of the problem on this Dell machine. It jumps in before the SATA drives finish closing the discs in Recode,Express,ImgBurn, and I believe DVDNextcopy2. I get burn errors-sometimes it works sometimes it is an error. Everything works with AnyDVD disabled during any program burn. The reason DVDFabPlat worked from gitgo was it requires AnyDVD be disabled. I have also notified slysoft who have been very helpful too.
