Has anyone else noted a massive decrease in speed with the last 2 anydvd updates. I backed up superman returns, and assumed it was merely the length of the film. But when I did movies previously backed up, the speeds are twice as long as in the past. Nothing else on my system or setup has changed. Could it be thise agressive mode (which is unchecked on my XP pro) or safe mode? Help.

Thank you for the rapid response. How do I do that? In the device manager settings?

To work around this issue, open Control Panel, and then follow these steps to configure the DMA/PIO settings for a controller:
    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.
    2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
    3. Click System Tools, and then click Device Manager.
    4. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
    5. Click the controller that you you want to configure DMA/PIO settings for.
    6. Click the Advanced Settings tab.
    7. In the Transfer Mode box, click either PIO Only or DMA if available.

    more

SLOW RIPS,Could be in PIO mode, READ HERE
    Go to
    My Computer
    Control Panel
    System
    Hardware
    Device Manager
    IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Open the installed IDE channels (Primary and Secondary)
    Click on Advanced settings
You will see the transfer mode. Change it to DMA if available. If any are PIO or stepdown dma you need to un-install the channel (right click on the channel and choose uninstall) and re-boot. Windows will reinstall the device and return it to DMA mode.
Be careful when using this procedure because if you have an older hard drive or storage device that does not support DMA you could corrupt your data.

NOTE IT CAN SAY DMA MODE BUT CAN BE IN PIO MODE

After the Windows IDE/ATAPI Port driver (Atapi.sys) receives a cumulative total of six time-out or cyclical redundancy check (CRC) errors, the driver reduces the communications speed (the transfer mode) from the highest Direct Memory Access (DMA) mode to lower DMA modes in steps. If the driver continues to receive time-out or CRC errors, the driver eventually reduces the transfer mode to the slowest mode (PIO mode)..

    What is DMA mode?
DMA (Direct memory access) mode is a high performance mode for transferring data to and from devices, in particular, to CD and DVD burner devices.
The burner devices can function in either DMA or PIO modes. DMA mode allows the processor to transfer large pieces of data with very little software overhead - therefore requiring low CPU utilization. In this mode, high speed burning can be performed in background with other programs running.
PIO mode requires CPU processing for every few bytes sent to the device, so that CPU utilization becomes very high when trying to burn at high speeds.

I have been investigating further and it does not appear to be the drive. Using Anydvd and shrink 3.2, the movie Click, full back up (with only the french sountrack removed) took 38 minutes, with speeds of 3,800KB/s. This is approximate for my liteon external drives past performance so drive degradation can be ruled out as well. Doing the same backup with clone dvd2 and anydvd takes 80 minutes. It appears clonedvd2 may be the problem. Your thoughts? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance for your time and effort.

I am not burning to any media at this point, merely ripping/compressing to HD, to be burned with NERO at a more convenient time. AT that point I only do 8x, to avoid errors. The problem is the time it takes to burn to the HD.

You said you checked your DMA setting and it is Ultra DMA 5. You had to have been checking your "Primary Channel" (Your Hard Drive) as I know of no Burner capable of that setting. Your burner would be on the "Secondary Channel". Check that channel & make sure it's Ultra DMA mode 2, a few drives will be mode 4. But most are Ultra DMA Mode 2. If the drive you use to read your discs with is in PIO mode, that would explain a lot for slow burning speeds.

BUt wouldn't the problem be pervasive regardless of the program used, if it was drive based? I checked the secondary channel and it is dma mode 2.

Yes, I agree, if CloneDVD 2 is the only program giving you slow speeds, it should be safe to assume something is wrong there. A setting, it could be a corrupt install. I would first defragment your hard drive, then try default settings in CloneDVD 2. If unsure how to do that, just uninstall CloneDVD 2, reboot, use a registry cleaner like CCleaner to clean up the registry.
Re-Install CloneDVD 2 & re-register it with your "key" you got from Slysoft. It will be in default settings at this point. The only setting I would change there is the write speed. Default is Maximum.
Set according to the media you use.

I have been having this same problem since the new version of clondvd2 came out, and in my case it is actually the read speed that is slow. The burn speed is the same as the previous version.
I sent a e-mail to slysoft and they were the ones the asked if it was the read or the write that was slower. I have replied to there e-mail but I havn't heard from them in over a week now.

With today's update of Anydvd, the problem disappeared. New problem is that for a 7GB FULL backup of looney toons v4d1 or d2 for all titles and menus, the compression is 95% at first and 100% when I remove the spanish track. (Yes, I am sure that I am doing a full back up!) Not too big an issue, but it is odd, nonetheless. It didn't appear that anydvd could be the culprit given that shrink was still able to rip at full speed, but it must be it given that I did not do any of the recommendations (out of sheer laziness) except just update anydvd today.

I figured it out: It was the animation of the sheep eating popcorn. I dont recall it being problematic before (not even sure it was on before), but why argue with results?

As for Looney toons V4- Anydvd just dont like those discs. If anydvd is running, the originals wont even play in my computer dvd player.
