My oldest pc seems to have a virus and I thought I got rid of it but I noticed it running slower than normal and when I go to the control panel to add/remove programs its very weird. It shows a couple programs then it has a long long set of black and white thick vertical lines after then it shows the rest of the programs. I've never ssen this before, has anyone else? So I figure I didn't fully get rid of the virus or not.
so you got more than on pc pretty simple to remove hdd & use it in an external & scan with one of the the pc's including spyware scan,if it shows nothing & still does it,reformat & reinstall OS,if it still performs poorly then it's a hardware issue
I went through and ran several well known free antivirus programs in and not in safe mode and I uninstalled all the useless junk and defraged and everything else, so everything seems to be working more smooth. BUT I still have the problem of the add/remove program window having a huge gap made of vertical black and white lines. What strikes me as odd is that in safe mode, that add/remove program window is perfectly normal. oh and i just reformated not too long ago. thanks for the speedy reply, hopefully you can help me figure out what my problem is, I'm not an average users but this I just cant figure out.
If it's normal in safe mode that cuts down on what's causing it,apart from say resetting desktop back to default settings & making use of msconfig to shutdown some proceses & startup programs & if the problem clears then re-enable them one at a time till it happens again then you know which program is the culprit i'm not sure how to help other than that so..... Unless someone else can help out i'm going to suggest to make a post at wincustomize.com forum reason being is i see it being their domain & you should get an answer & help faster, in doing so you must include make, model of computer,OS whether xp,vista or win 7 including if it's 32bit or 64 & graphics card & mobo model also mention if your not running any sort of GUI software like windowblinds be sure to say so,would help to post a picture of the control panel with lines issue. 1-include mention virus infection or whether it was malware or spyware 2-did this line issue happen before or after infection-if not sure say so 3-mention drive appears clean now after scan & defrag 4-in safe mode all is normal only other two people in AD i think could help out would be ddp & 2oldgeek try pm'ing them with link to this thread other than that it's trial & error & removing any recent new software, reason i suggest wincustomize is it sounds like a drawing problem however i'm no expert so it would be best not to assume what i say is anything to do with what's happening so if you decide to criuse over to WC keep a clear & open mind
the thing with doing a system recovery of course was i didn't want to take the time and my dvd disc drive has been stuck with the restore disc in it for a while now, so i went ahead and restored and everything is back in order as i and all of you assumed, fresh installs and restores are mostly better than troubleshooting. anyway thanks for all your help everyone.
well it need never have to happen again go get macrium reflect & start creating one time images,it's free software & replaces system restore as your images are held in external hard drives preferably two of them as it means you have a backup to the backup, note i say images & not cloned drives, next time you get an infection you'll be backup & running in under 30min for an average sized drive of around 40-50gb of data or so,there will be no need to reinstall software etc as it's a full working copy of what you had before infection
are you referring to disc imaging? I'm familiar with it. Just never bother because I have so many computers. this being the biggest pos. but its my pc i keep all my school stuff on so i have to keep it running. O yea by the way, no matter what type of media player I use now on this machine, when i go to full screen the screen goes completely white but the video still plays idk what the deal is with that either.
Hiren boot cd comes in handy in situations like this . Combofix usually fixes most issues and dialafix fixes a lot or registry problems .
