I had a member try to help me with this, but I thought I'd put it out there for someone senior (sorry if this offended anyone). I am lacking consistency as 2 backed up copies play all the way through (on a sony DVD+R 4x max, but with a couple dozen freezes, so not great) and 2 that seemingly went through the process fine with the Shrink/DVD dycryptor combo(these two on Prodisc DVD+R 8x max as I have an 8x burner) but freeze period around 25 minutes into each movie! Both of them on this "better" media. I can't even jump chapters in the backup to see if it will go to the end of the backup (whether it by my 2002 high end Pioneer DV-45a Elite DVD player or the computer that burned them in the first place). I went to the link suggested for compliance and there should be NO problem with this on either unit. It seems like all of these issues tend to lean towards the media, and hence why i bought what was highly suggested on the afterdawn.com site, Prodisc. Could it be 8x max with an 8x max burner? Could it be the fact I used +R instead of -R? I just don't get it. I get a whole movie with multiple flaws with so-so disks (Sony 4x) and great copies and then a big freeze with good disks (Prodisc 8x). Does anyone out there have a feel for this one? Thanks again
it is most likely bad media. I have tried many different types of "cheap" media and like you got some inconsistant performance. If you do searches throughout this forum, anyone will tell you that you need to invest in ritek G04. They are by far the best dvd media out. I have probably backed up 30 movies and about 20 games and I have yet to made a coaster with the ritek media. there are many online sites to find riteks, but I am pretty biased to meritline.com. they have the best prices and very fast shipping.
I'll add my 2 cents worth, deezp1 covered it pretty well. I can burn at 8X with my Pioneer A-07, but have errors with some media. I've got a bunch of Memorex, mfg listed as Prodisc. I'm using hacked firmware and this media is only rated for 4X burning, however Ritek G-04 4X burn with no problems at this speed. The Memorex freeze up and die at about the same time yours do. They work just fine when burned at 4X.
Do you have a preference of DVD-R vs. DVD+R? I have an 8x burner and I'm not sure which way to go. I was definitely told I would be smart to stay with -R's when it comes to backing up games. Isn't +R a better picture or quality for backing up movies though? I wonder if using the +R's have been causing this issue? Thanks deezp1
Its just two competing formats, I find the -R to be a bit more compatable in the players I have. I think you should get a few and try them. http://store.yahoo.com/meritline/ritek-dvd-blank-media.html Free shipping too!
fasfrank is right, -r are more compatiable with standalones and games. also, samsung players (which are very popular in standalone players) are not compatible with +r's
Thanks everyone. Man, it almost seems as if 90% or better of the problems can be derived from the media. Unbelievable. I have some Ritek DVD-R G04's on the way. I hope this takes care of this pain. I guess the 8x Prodisc's are no good after all. Meritline.com even suggested them to me for the 8x burner. Oh well. P.s. Embarassingly enough, I was wrong in by Sony's. They are actually Maxell DVD-R's 4x that kept erroring on me, but I always got a complete backup. I'll be Maxell is way down the list of media to choose from based on my backup experience so far.
I've an 8X burner as well and I'm not a fan of burning at that speed. I've done several burns at that speed for testing purposes and found I had playback problems with a certain player that is fine with the same media burned at 4X. Faster doesn't always mean better
