ok, heres the deal well the other day there was minor thunder and well i didnt really notice until BANG there was a really loud bang of tunder. immediatly after that bang a box popped up on my computer at the bottom saying 'local area connection a network cable is unplugged' i didnt really think much of it and though it may just be a ntl (my provder) problem. i quickly turned the computer off to avoid surges or spikes. after about 3 hours i turned my computer on hoping i could do some browsing when the same message appeared at the bottom 'local area connection a network cable is unplugged' so i went downstairs to where my modem is kept and saw that the ethernet light which is normally on was not. i was still hoping that it was ntls problem and so i turned the computer off and left it until the next day. the next day, turned the computer on same message appeared so i decided to phone up ntl they told me several different steps which i did to no avail. they just said that its probably a faulty ethernet wire and said goodbye. after that i then moved the computer down stairs on to floor which is reight next to the modem and tried a brand new ethernet cable which i bought and still the same problem the ethernet light is not on or flasing at all. i then remembered that the ntl modem also came with a usb cable and so tried that and hey presto it worked perfectly. but the ethernet still doesnt. my question is, is it my computers ethernet port or the modems ethernet port that has burned out. P.S iv also done al the obvious things such as sawp the ends of the ethernet cable and also restarting the box. Any help would be greatly appreicated thanks anyone Danny. (sorry if it was a bit long =D)
You might want to replace the modem. People like yourself, and me, have gotten stuck before thinking that your internet connection is a computer problem. Chances are the modem got fried during a voltage spike. Most surge protectors can adjust accordingly for normal fluctuations, but they don't protect against lightning induced surges. So for future reference, don't just turn off the power...unplug them as well.
I had the same problem. Spent days trying to find a fault with the PC or the line. In the end I just replaced the modem and it worked perfectly
