it wont switch off i have tried everything including sleep the light just switches off but the menu is still there until by battery goes dead, i have tried holding menu and select to reset it but had no luck, also a screen keeps appearing saying "firewire connections are not supported" even though i dont even have my ipod connected to anything but my headphones.

If it won't reset, then you will have to try to restore it. Connect it to your computer and restore with iTunes, or if it doesn't show up in iTunes reformat with 'My Computer'.

iv narrowed it down to the ipod radio, for some reason my ipod keeps detecting it as a firewire connection, and thus causes all these problems, dont understand why it has only just started appearing with this error though

Did you try restoring it like I suggested?
