    Hi

Im new to all this, Im looking into getting a projector for around £400-£600. Ive been looking on ebay at secondhand ones. It will be used for home movies and in a coach/motorhome.

Where is the best place to get them in the UK?
What do I need to look for?
whats the average price of the lamps?

    Thanks

    James

Hi, you could get yourself a projector in that price range, but it really will need to be a secondhand one. For that sort of money, you are going to have to probably stay with SVGA resolution.

This is what you are looking for in that price range:

    SVGA Resolution
Try and get higher than 300:1 contrast ratio
Try and get 1500 Lumens plus.

    Sony VPL-ES projectors
    Epson EMP-52 & 73: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=22610&item=3095520622&rd=1

In terms of Lamp life, most projectors get atleast 1300 hours out of a lamp, though more modern ones tend to get closer to 2000 hours. Depending on how often u watch movies, even one every night, it would take you years to use up a lamp, so a projector like the Epson above with only 150 hours will last a long time. Most lamps are in the price range of £150-300.

I dont know the SOny at all, I believe it is only available in Germany, though i could be wrong. It seems good value, though i personally only ever send a signal down a coaxial cable, not wireless lol.

The Epson is a Presentation projector, built for large screen presentations and for stacking together with others. The output in Lumens is far too high for Home Cinema and is likely to be very noisy in comparison to a Home Cinema model.

Keep an eye on these projectors:

If so it's a Very popular projector which I also own. Everybody seems to love em. Myself included.

Well, the Faroudja DCDi chip is excellent. Its a great price for an SVGA projector, probably needs the room to be very dark though, because i think it has a low contrast ratio. Amazing value to think that you can have a huge screen TV for that price though. Add this to it (which i bought) and it turns it into an amazing Home TV system:

They normally retail around £130 or something - excellent bargain i think.
