I've been trying to append some music video avi files together so I can convert all of them as one file to DVD format so I can burn it to a DVD disc and watch on my DVD player on my 52" TV. I get the error message audio streams do not share a common sampling rate. There's actually more to that message but I think that's enough so you know what I'm talking about. Below are the directions I got from this forum but when I followed the instructions to the letter I still got the same error message as before. Can anyone help me with this?

    Walt

    Open VirtualDUBMOD

VirtualDUBMOD is almost identical at first glance to the original client, but its differences become apparent when you want to work with audio streams in particular. It also supports the MKV container and OGM containers, not just AVI.

    Open First AVI file

To open the first AVI file, click File --> Open video file. Use the file browser that pops up to find the first AVI file (the start of the movie etc.), select it and click Open. If your file contains VBR MP3 audio you will now get a pop-up message.

    Do not re-write header

In a nutshell, in order for VirtualDUBMOD (and the original client) to perform properly, it usually would re-write the headers of the MP3 stream in the AVI file if it is VBR audio. However, if this happens when you are trying to join, you will get an error message when you try to open the second AVI file. Therefore you must click the No button.

    Seek to last frame

Now that your video is open, you will notice that you can seek the video using the slider at the bottom of the program. Slide it all the way to the end of the video stream and hit the right direction key to make sure that you are at the very last frame.

It is now time to open the second AVI file.

    Append Segment

With the last frame of the first file selected, click File --> Append Segment. Now with the file browser, find the second AVI file that you wish to merge to the end of the first file, select it, and click Open. If all went well, both should now be loaded into VirtualDUBMOD ready to be saved as a single AVI file. However, there is one more vitally important thing to do before that.

Set Video to Direct Stream Copy

If all went well, both should now be loaded into VirtualDUBMOD ready to be saved as a single AVI file. However, there is one more vitally important thing to do before that.

Set Video to Direct Stream Copy

Unless you want to re-encode the entire video to uncompressed video (default), this step is very important. Click Video and select Direct Stream Copy. This will now copy the video stream stored in the AVI files 1:1 and won't degrade the quality or produce a massive file. The next step now is to save the file.

    Save AVI file

To save the file, Click File --> Save as.. and a new file browser will open up, looking like the one in the picture to the right of this text.

Find the folder you wish to save the merged AVI file in and type a new filename. When you are done, click Save.

    The Merging Process

The amount of time that it will take for VirtualDUBMOD to merge both the AVI files into a single long AVI file depends on the speed of your computer and the size of the files. However, it should only take a few short minutes at most since Direct Stream Copy is selected.

    Finally

Hopefully this article will have shown you how to easily merge two AVI files with VBR MP3 audio without getting any sampling rate errors. If you need more assistance, please visit our Discussion Forums and ask for help.

I've tried that program and it works but two problems. One is what kind of file does it create because it's not an avi file because when I double click it instead of automatically opening in Media Player Classic I have to choose the program to open it. When I tried to use a video converter program the file was not even detected by my program. AVS Video Converter. Also the first music video played perfectly but the second was out of sync (sound and video). Any suggestions?

I am not sure of the sync problem, what caused it...I never had issues(not with AVI files; U did have sync issues with Mpeg2 videos).

I just joined a 3 part movie with VBR audio, and I have no problems.

The reason your file is not an "AVI" is because you did not add the extension. Just re-name it and add the .avi at the end, Avidemux does not do that automatically.

Did you say "Yes" to the message below?

I used Vdownloader to download the music videos from YouTube and it said avi files but I did have the sync problems. The window at the end of your last posting never appeared for me when I did it. Thanks for telling me about renaming the extension though that never occurred to me as I have never seen a file that just said file and not avi or wmv or whatever.

I never used Vdownloder, I use Download Helper and get the videos as MP4, HD if available.
If you want to download/convert/join in one step, you can use Any Video Converter. It can download in whatever format you want from youtube, and can join the files together. If you use FireFox, you can just "Drag'n'drop" the Youtube videos without even launching the playback(for example if you have a playlist on youtube, just drag and drop each video window, no need to copy/paste the URL).

I don't understand what your saying by downloading, joining, and converting in one step. I can use either program (Vdownloader or the one you mentioned) to download the video. I use a free program to convert the file to DVD format called Free Video to DVD Converter that works better than any other conversion program that I've tried and I've tried 3 or 4 different ones. I'm not sure if it will convert anything other than AVI though. As far as converting and joining together goes that's where you lost me. First of all I have to take the music videos and join them together before converting them to DVD format to burn to disc so it will play on my DVD player and show on my TV. If I were to convert them individually then I could only burn one song to a disc. The conversion software will not download nor join them together so can you explain what you were trying to tell me in last post?

It all depends on the ultimate goal you have....did not know your ultimate goal was burning to DVD.

For example there are full length movies or concerts posted on youtube. If you wanted to download all those and join them into an AVI, that program can do that for you in one step.

As for converting to DVD...did yu try DVDStyler or DVD Flick ? Will allow you to add plenty of clips. With DVD Flick you can group different clips in one title, have multiple titles with menus...and will accept about any video format, not just AVI.

Ok I'll give DVD Flick a try. Yes that was my goal to join the music videos together to convert to DVD and burn to DVD disc. I hope this DVD Flick works I had never heard of it before. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks.

    Glad it works for you!
All the movies on youtube are available in a lower quality,MP4 or FLV however, many of them are becoming available in better quality in MP4 format. With Download Helper, the Fire Fox extension, you can download whichever quality you want from what is available. You will see displayed when trying to download,[HQ18],[HQ22],[HQ35]...Here's a guide to which is which:
