Are SecuROM-protected games really safe to install?

I've held off buying a lot of new games because of DRM, however I just completed building a new PC and as such, I'm anxious to really put the hardware to the test.

Before I do though, can someone give me a no-BS assessment (as I've heard all the DRM-related "horror" stories) as to whether SecuROM 7/8 protected games are A) Easy to authenticate (you know firewall issues, connection issues, drop-outs, etc.) B) Have any noticeable impact on system performance (any extra services/crap running in the background?) and C) Is it actually possible to COMPLETELY remove all remnants of SecuROM once you uninstall the game?

Because the last thing I want to do is shell out 80 dollars for a game, install it and have some resident malware/rootkit nonsense staying on my PC and hiding in the registry well after I'm done playing through the game and/or possibly phoning home and leaving back doors for trojans to exploit.

it's rootkit/malware.. you can completely remove it, but it's not easy.. best way to get rid of it afterwards is to make a proper backup image of where you are at before you install it.. then when you finish return to that image like you lost however many weeks...

better still.. just forget paying the bastards for malware in the first place..

I take it you've had some bad previous experience with SecuROM?
