Hi all, I've been Googling this answer but no luck. So, here's the question - Are Wii chips region free? I mean, if I brought my PAL Wii to Hong Kong and asked someone to chip it for me, would it be dangerous? Or would it be totally OK? I really want to mod my Wii but I am hopeless at that kind of stuff... I would get someone from the UK to help me mod my Wii but I don't know where to find a guy like that... So - Are Wii mod chips region free? Sorry if I've asked a dumb question but seriously, I can't find the answer. Also, which is the best type of Wii chip? Thank you in advance.

I'll answer you this way: All wii modchips are drivechips, meaning they connect to the DVD drive. And there is no region coding built into the drive. You can actually take an unmodded DVD drive out of a PAL console and swap it into an NTSC console and it will play NTSC games, not PAL ones.

I see... So then it's safe that I bring my Wii to HK to get it modded (if parents allowed, I'm young). Thanks allot :)

So, how do I get my serial code? Open my Wii up? No thank you :S I think that I'll stick to legal stuff :(

    Huh?

Your serial code is on a sticker on the side of the wii.

Why bother starting this thread if you want to "stick to the legal stuff"

I would not trust anyone from Hong Kong to mod my Wii. They'll probably put in a fake chip or use shoddy tools. Find somebody locally.

I agree, they will most likely give you a cheap clone.

You know, I have the right to change my mind after some research and I believe that I don't need to give you an explanation.

We've been pretty helpful on what was a somewhat newbie question and a pretty stupid plan (seriously, flying all the way to hong kong to mod your console?) What you do with your wii is entirely up to you, but theres no need to get so snippy and rude.

Yet it's true, I don't need to give you an explanation. Yes, flying all the way to Hong Kong just to mod my console. Seriously, no one can be that stupid. I go to Hong Kong every year so I can take my Wii the next time I go.
Also, the word newbie describes exactly what I am in the Wii scene. Having senior status doesn't mean I know everything.

kikz ahhhh you need to find out what type of drive you have to find out what type of modchip you need!!! there are several chips for each type of drive, buy knowing your drive type you can look up the available modchips....it's kinda necessary and modding you console is not illegal btw as long as you own it....

Looking at the prices of some Wii games in the UK, I really want to mod my Wii... I'm going to HK next year but the games I want would probably drop - but I'll get it mod anyway. I'll find out my code when my sis is finished with the Wii :D
