I have just recieved a DVD burner, a Nexxtech 16x DVD+- double layer, and it came with Nero 6.6.0.19 and Nero Vision Express 3 and some other stuff. I want to put my movies on DVDs and watch them on TV, simple enough, but I cannot make the resolution right. No matter what I try, there is always a huge amount of screen missing on the edges of the screen. I've tried multiple DVD players and have burned about five different dvds and I always have the same problem of the edges being cut off. What can I do? There doesn't appear to be an option to force the video to a certain size. The videos I am trying to burn are 640x480, and I don't care if there's black lines on the sides as long as I don't loose any content. Thank you for your help.
I did some more research and I will expand my problem. The NTSC standerd is supposedly 720x480 When I burn a DVD with Nero Vision, the 4:3 ratio NTSC style (both US and NTSC) burns the movie to 704x480. This still doesn't make sense though because I still miss info on all four edges of the screen. I really don't know what to do. Should I install new drivers?
Nero has a tendency to use the aspect ratio it finds present on the video you are using. Even if you select a different one, it may change back to the one it sees on your original video file. Something to try: At the bottom of the NVE screen, select "More". Select "Video Options" Select "DVD-Video" tab. Select the aspect ratio to use. 4:3 for example. A pop-up screen will appear. It says "Do you want these settings to become the new default?" Select Yes. That should cause Nero to hold on to the aspect ratio setting you selected throughout the process. From what I've seen, when a 16:9 movie is displayed, a standard TV will have a black bar above and below the picture. When a 16:9 film is converted to 4:3 it will loose some of the picture on both sides of the screen.
Ok, so I tried about 5 more times and here's the scoop, or the poop if you want: The video is always burned in 704x480. This wouldn't be a problem except that the DVD player displays less of that. I burned one file in 16:9 to see what would happen and it work JUST like it should. I watch it on a 4:3 and it has a black box around it. A fairly even black box which shows that it burned evenly. I don't know if it burned perfectly, but it was widescreen and I could see all of the video, (only smaller). I put the DVD player in widescreen mode and then there were still black sides but the image was squished and the top and bottom were chopped off again. Whatever... I wiped it, reinstalled it, and updated it (again) and the same problem happens. I might just cave in and burn everything in widescreen and maybe tape up a nice border on my TV. I sent a message to the support staff (badly programed form too) and hopefully they'll respond to me, although i couldn't give them everything they asked for because there attachment option doesn't work like they want it too. Now I will go watch a 2 minute video that I burned in widescreen. yay!
You can burn everything in widescreen and just use the "zoom" function on your DVD player's remote. I checked out several DVD players and every one of them can do this. It's a lot easier than doing an AR conversion and has the same results.
