I posted this before in the CD-r forums and will be damned if it hasn't jumped off the pages somewhere into infinity. I have no idea if anyone ever answered it or not. First question is: Where do the posts go to that I can't locate them anymore to see if they were answered?
Second question is: How and where do I install Neros
wnaspi32.dll driver onto my windows XP Home? I have it burned to a cd right now. So what exactly am I supposed to do with it? I know the Microsofts directions for installing their driver is a joke (way too complicated for me). I guess they think everyone is a comp. expert. Anyway I heard Neros aspi is better anyway. Can anyone please explain it (simply) where/how I am to drag it off the cd I ahve it burned to and to where do I drag it?
Thank you people for any help you can offer :)
    P.S.
In case this post dissappears too like the last one, please email me the answere.

    1. When you get your email thingy, it automatically chucks you off to the right link regardless of where it was moved to.

    2. You install Nero's ASPI by installing Nero BurningROM

    3. SYSTEM aspi, you can find out more about that via http://cd-rw.org/articles/archive/aspisetup.cfm

    Thanks Praetor
So all I have to do is install Nero and the aspi will automatically install also. It can be confusing especially after learning that Nero has this Burning Rights thing that I have no idea what that is all about, except that I guess somewhere along the line it will come back to bite me.
Thanks for the link. I'm definetly going there.

Whilst most programs use the 'standard' ASPI, some others, like Nero and Blindwrite have thie own 'special' ASPI because standard ASPI is unreliable (not in that its unstable or anything but rather, that the avg computer doesnt have it installed, or has it installed incorrectly).

ASPI, Advanced SCSI Programming Interface, is the source of enough problems with anything even remotely related to an optical drive. Note that Windows2000 and WindowsXP do NOT come with ASPI installed and many users, just starting to do more than basic activities with their drives are encountering problems left and right. ASPI is one of the simplest things to check for -- it just takes one reboot. For more information regarding ASPI see http://cd-rw.org/articles/archive/aspisetup.cfm CAUTION NOTE THAT JUST BECAUSE NERO INFOTOOLS OR EVEN ASPICHECK ITSELF SAYS THAT ASPI IS INSTALLED CORRECTLY IT IS NOT INSTALLED CORRECTLY IF THE VERSION NUMBERS DO NOT MATCH UP. ALL FOUR SETS OF NUMBERS HAVE TO BE IDENTICAL. If you are having issues with ASPI and updating to the latest version doesnt help, consider ASPI 4.60 (1021) -- it's the most stable and reliable build of them all.

    WOW!!
Thanks a bunch for that info. I had heard negative things about the new aspi 4.71 and only 1 or 2 things bad being said about Neros aspi, but had not heard anything being said at all bad about 4.60. Maybe I should just use it instead of trrying th newer ones anyway, because being very new to this stuff, I am sure I would have no idea how to uninstall the new aspi if I didnt want it and wanted to use something else. I just recently got an answere about uninstalling the software that my cd burner is using so I could use Nero instead (apparently I don't have to uninstall anything afterall, just install Nero and I guess its supposed to override my pcs burning program).
Thanks again Praetor for the help.\Thanks a lot.

PS> I just went to the official aspi drivers downloads and they didnt have 4.60 anywhere. The earliest versions they had was 4.70. Do you know where else I can get the 4.60 (1021) version?
    Thanks again.

Thanks Praetor for that link. I'm going there to get it now. I already have Neros aspi (it came with my Nero program 5.5.10) plus I downloaded an extra copy of it just in case I lost the original. I know that's being paranoid, but windows XP home (which is what I have is really doing to me).
I have read tons of arrticles not only from this site (which is my favorite btw) but from others, and the one thing that struck me the most of all, was that, it seemed that the majority of people who were having compatibility problems were all or mostly all, were using XP Home (like myself). Since I started researching all this dvd creating stuff starting last year, I have so far found out at least 17 things that have to be disabled before doing any dvd creating so as to avoid conflicts. Now I am beginning to think there may still be even more stuff that has to be disabled or enabled (like the DMA) that I just haven't discovered yet. I just the other day learned that if I were to try and use Adaptecs aspi (I got this info from Microsoft I belive it was) that it was really complex to install as it had to be installed in the correct location for it to work correctly. Something about root menu (which I haven't found out what exactly that is YET :)and do this and that and this and the other. wow so much involvement for such a tiny application.
So naturally I am really leaning to Neros aspi because I learned that when you install Nero the aspi will install automatically into the right locations without me doing anything other than starting the installation process. But concerning the version 4.60,
can I just download it into the My Documents folder where I want to burn it onto a cd for my software libraray so I will always have it, AND THEN
just double click on it to install it from there? And is that all there is to it to install it correctly or do I have to go thru all that stuff that I would have to go thru if I were trying to install version 4.71.?
Sorry if this thread gt long and convoluted friend, but it really is a nightmare for me and I have been researching this whole thing for over a year now I think it has been and am still finding out stuff that I am wondering how much more is there I haven't found out yet.
Thanks again for the great help Praetor.

    1. Nero ASPI works only for ... well.... Nero.
    2. Download the thingy from my website, and just run the aspi32.exe file and install away. A quick reboot and you'll have the ASPI as verified by the ASPICHK.exe file.

Thanks for all of the good info, Praetor. I hope that you can answer a few of my questions. I recently updated my Adaptec ASPI layer to 4.71.2. However, when I run ASPICHK.EXE, the version numbers do not match. Here is what I see:

    ASPI32.SYS 4.71.2
    WOWPOST.EXE 4.6 (1021)
    WINASPI.DLL 4.6 (1021)
    WNASPI32.DLL 4.71.2

Does this mean that my ASPI layer is corrupted? Is it possible to uninstall the update, and is doing so as easy as running the 4.60 ASPI32.EXE program your previous message had linked to?

On another note, I also have NERO 6. Does NERO automatically use its own ASPI layer even though I have the Adaptec layer installed?

Finally, I've been having trouble burning DVDs at full 4x speed. I've tried every option. Does the ASPI layer have ANYTHING to do with this problem, or is it unrelated?

I appreciate any help that you can provide.

    David

    1. Your ASPI is not corrupted but rather I would hazard a guess that the 4.71 installation wasnt successful as it may have stated

    2. Burning DVDs at 4x is not entirely dependent on the ASPI (ASPI mainly affects reading rather than writing).

    3. Try ASPI 4.60. I have a link for it on my site:

This is a followup to the posts of 9 jan 2004 by dshih and David Praetor.

I have the same ASPI information that dshih presented. I did not knowingily try to update my drivers. I just installed Nero Ultra edition and did not know a thing about ASPI problems. I still do not fully understand the need or function of the ASPI drivers.
Anyway, David Praetor, you suggested that dshih reinstall the ver 4.7.
    1. If he does this will he not overwrite the version that the Nero installed?
    2. If not, do different versions of ASPI drivers co-reside without walking over each other? ie: reinstalling ver 4.7 will not overwrite the Nero version but will reside on the hdd along with Adaptec version?
    3. I have just started using Nero Ultra 6.3.02 on a Liteon 411S drive and have not had any problems (so far). If you go to the Lite-On website you will get folks stating all kinds of horror stories with this particular drive.
    4. Any guides on how to write mpeg files to a cd or a DVD?
    Thanks for the good forum.

I went back to the 4.60 ASPI from 4.71 with no problems. Nero Infotool says that my ASPI is correctly installed when all four files are version 4.60, and it says that it is corrupted when two of them are version 4.71. I haven't found version 4.71 of all four files.

However, none of this has anything to do with burning speed, as Praetor suggested. I've seen no difference when using either ASPI version.

I assume that Nero uses its own ASPI when it's running.

    dshih,
I did not realize that the Nero tool gave info on the ASPI drivers.
Now like computers go, I have the situation you had before (two files at 4.7 & two files at 4.6) and of course the ero infotool says that my ASPI drivers are installed and working correctly.
It is the Adaptec (aspichk.exe) tool that is saying I have a improper installation. Go Figure as to who to believe. If things start behaving strange I will switch them all to ver 4.6.

Any knowledge on how to burn mpg files to a CD and / or a DVD?

    Thanks

Re-install ASPI Layer 4.6>reboot>run ASPI check and all drivers should be 4.6.

A big thanks to all who answered in this thread! I have been trying to get a Nilon Coolscan II, a Tekram DC315 working with XP Home. They were, and then I did a re-build and followed the advice everywhere else about using ASPI 4.7 (how got the thing working first time around I don't know!).
So, a week of mystery is over!
    Thanks again.

Attention: Praetor.. the file no longer exists.. Can you please make it available again? That file was very helpful with my old winxp machine, but I deleted the file and now I got to reformat a new machine and I need it, urgently. Thanks and kind regards.

PS. Anybody who has Praetor's aspi 4.6 zip file, please make it available. Thanks.

I have been following this thread for ASPI answers but am still confused. I installed 4.6 from link above and versions read
    SPI32.SYS 4.57
    WOWPOST.EXE 4.6
    WINASPI.DLL 4.57
    WNASPI32.DLL 4.57
When I try to use dvd decryptor is still does not not see "no device". Can someone please help.
