I just got a new Gateway computer with the above mentioned drive in it and would greatly appreciate it if someone could point me in the direction of a booktyping utility that I can use on it. I tried the LiteOn utility from their website and it wouldn't work. Any suggestions?

What burning program are you using? Nero will usually booktype +R automatically if supported.

Try ImgBurn. It's a burning program but can also be used to booktype if your burning program doesn't.
Go to mode>write. Have a +R disc in the drive. In the bottom right hand corner you'll see what looks like a book. Click on that then try the tab for LiteOn.

I've been using Nero 6.6.0.18 and when I went to choose recorder and options there was no option to booktype.

I tried ImgBurn but when I tried the LiteOn tab I got an error that said Invalid field in CDB when I hit the change button.

In Nero you can try this - in smartstart under toolkit pick cd-dvd speed. Go to Extra>Bitsetting.
You can also try the other tabs in ImgBurn but if none of this works then looking like this drive doesn't booktype.
The Philips-LiteOn hybrid - haven't ran into that one so this one might not booktype.

Unless you are planning on burning DL discs booktyping is no big deal. Both my drives booktype but I still use -Rs.

    Binky,
When I opened up the Bitsetting window it showed the Current disc type as DVD+R and current booktype as DVD+R but that's all. All of the options are grayed out. Thanks for trying to help, it's appreciated.

    MysticE,
At the moment I don't intend to burn DL but I have 2 stand alone players that disagree on what they like and in order to have a disc that I can play on either one they need to be booktyped. Thanks for the thought though.

Yeah it's looking like this drive doesn't booktype. -R discs would be you're best bet. Most newer players accept both formats - most of mine accept both except one and then there's the ps2 that's picky so I still booktype any +R discs.

Nope not mine - I have about 6 dvd players - the apex and mintek both about 4 years old don't support the +R format.
Just depends on the make & model :)

Binky and MysticE, thank you both. My "problem child" is an Apex AD-660. It's an oldie but a goody and has outlasted a couple of others that I've gotten since. I contacted LiteOn support and this is the answer I got in part:

Tech Support: Unfortunately, there is no booktype option. These were available for older models. Using the nero software that should have been provided with your drive, it will format the files for you and finalize the disc to playback on stand alone players

I figured I would include it so that if anyone else should have the same question I did, LiteOn's answer would be here.

That's a bit of BS from LiteOn cause their newer drives still booktype.
It's not just the older ones.
How is your drive reported in device manager? Like what is the name and model # listed there?
I haven't heard of Philips and LiteOn making drives together but anything is possible.

In Device Manager it's listed as ATAPI DVD A DH16A1P. In my search to find out who made it I came up with ATAPI (Philips-LiteOn).

This is an odd drive. I can find other DH models for LiteOn's but not this model # and those support booktyping.
My guess is since it looks to be a 'hybrid' drive between Philips & LiteOn this model doesn't support booktyping at all.

Try this link from a new member of AD:
    http://club.cdfreaks.com/f44/dh-16a1p-info-please-231668/

I have the same exact drive, but know so little about flashing them, I'm gonna get help from greensman first! LOL!!

    Best Regards,
    Russ
