i have no proof but some of ATI drivers cause conflicts but i personaly think ATI have greater performance and features while nVidia are more common and also nVidia have (i dont know whether it still applies) made the best graphics card so far... please to not come down on me like a tonne of bricks cause i do not know much about gfx cards
so far as i know the best performing and highest speed graphics cards are currently made by nvidia who seem to have quite an edge over ATi when it comes to memory MHz. but as far as video quality for editing and such is concerned ATi tends to get the majority vote. basically in gaming Nvidia are top but in video editing and rendering ATi are supposedly top.
I have to disagree about the gaming, i have and ATI graphices 256MB and my g/f has a nVidia 256MB, i have played the same games on both mine and my g/f PC and mine wins everytime, sometimes my g/f nVidia card cant even handle the top wak on the games graphics, whereas my ATI runs smooth. Fair enough it could have something to do with the cards quality and the PC specs, but from me i say ATI everytime
@Nickit by that im guessing that your PC is probably at a higher spec than your GFs. Also to have a fair comparisson youd have to get some similar spec graphics cards when they are benchmark tested properly Nvidia creams ATi on the graphics every time
Fair enough, im think about buying the new ATI x1800 512MB, or do you think i should go with the Nvidia equivalent?
id go for the nvidia 7800 512 instead. they have nearly 2GHz memory speeds and way out perform the ATi cards. i cant really say that there is an ATi "equivilent" to this card as its so much faster

my god nickit you are the only other person apart from me ive ever known on this site to use eclipse computers as for graphics cards needing power supplies thats been going on for quite some time now with the higher spec cards as they require more power than the motherboard can supply

Since im going to be using the GraFX card for mainly gaming, most of you agree that Nvidia Obliterates ATI completely?
I wouldnt say obliterate more like, Nvidia take ATI stamps on it, drives over it repeatedly, sets it on fire, spits on it, drowns it, and finally tells it that it is crap! ATI is still good though, i use ATI (Only because my PC came with it)
Though I have no ATI cards to do any side by side comparison, over the years, it seems that the two companies have played tug-o-war over the best performance. Each has it's strong points, and weak points. However, at this time...as it would be (check more out at Guru3D, and Maximum PC), ATI is falling so far behind, we don't even know if they'll ever make it back. ATI has been known to have severe driver issues...and Nvidia has been known to have them as well. As far as sheer horsepower, Nvidia has the lead. The new 7900 core due out in February will have 32 pixel pipes, run at 750Mhz...with 512mb of GDDR3 (or GDDR4) memory @ 900mhz (1.8Ghz effective). ATI is still working out the bugs in it's Crossfire solution, which was spanked like a newborn when it was compared to Nvidia's SLI. On even systems mind you. Read up in Maximum PC's articles...they do side by side comparisons on the most even platforms you can get. Same ram, mobos (if applicable) drives, OSes...you name it. Keep in mind though, 512mb of ram is an ego boost at this point...when compared to 256mb cards of the same core, there is little, if no difference in benchmark scores. If you want an all in one solution, ATI would be the way to go...like I said, application is the key. But at present, ATI is falling behind. Early indications that the X1600 series won't even come close to the 7900 cores, much less the newer 8000, 9000 series Nvidia cards that are already near the testing stages.
From what i know, which is not a great deal..it has always been back and forwards for who has the leade in quality, i.e. Nvidia will bring out an awesome product one season and then the next season ATI will get its act together and bring out an even more awesome product
Nvidia certainly seem to have taken the lead recently. for every step Ati has been taking Nvidia have been taking a giant leap. the last time i compared the highest specs of the 2, the top nvidia card had about a 33% higher MHz clock than the top ATi card. i haer they are starting to close the gap but well have to wait and see what the nvidia 8 series brings
ATI didn't exactly come out with all barrels firing.... The latest core (X1800) is still only 16 pipes. Nvidia's is 24 (7800), with the next one coming out in Feb at 32 (7900). Jacking up an old core to higher clock frequencies was yet another mistake by ATI. Those that bought an X800, just to see the X850 come out 100mhz faster, and still $500.00 was a slap in the face. Nvidia being SM3.0 supportive since the 6800 series was yet another black eye for ATI... Unless ATI can pull away from it's glory days of being the supplier for the XBox360 (which is just a waste of money in my opinion anyways)...they'll be hard pressed to come up with anything new...much less have the strength to keep going rounds with Nvidia.
There is no doubt about it, nVidia's cards push higher memory speeds. But is that all there is to performance? Nah. The image quality debate could go on all day, but to be honest, let's look at the face of it. The 512MB 7800GTX costs far more than the X1800XT 512MB. That, and one other reason is why, despite performance I'm pro ATi. AVivO. Did you see the beta application for video encoding ATi created? If this is a tool we can get soon, I see no sign of such program from the green camp, and encoding a film 6x the speed of an Athlon64 X2 4800+ is quite an achievement, I think you'll agree. If the Unreal engine is anything to go by, ATi are winners, but conversely, Doom 3 / Quake 4? Tough decision, I'm ATi, but some are nVidia. I think it's personal preference.
