Maybe someone who has one of those drives can help you out, if I remember right, plextor has its own version of the CD/DVD drive speed test. But anyways, if they play well in your standalone player and you are happy with the results then it's okay.. I rarely scan disks anyways, mainly for Sh*ts and giggles anyways.

If you have Plextor drives and they came with PlexTools you can do your tests. Just use the Qcheck it will test your disks. My drive will not work with Nero Test but will work with PlexTools.

The firmware is current. I never get good scan results using the Nero tool - yet I never get coasters and my discs play in everything and longevity is never an issue. I really don't know what the significance of a bad scan test is other than it is a disc that produces bad scan test results ;)

Hmmmm... I can't really comment in query to the new YUDEN000T03, since I haven't used it, plus I don't think it's available in the US yet. How fast did you burned by the way? Maybe it is a bad batch and or it's dirty (or defected) somewhere in the middle of the disc you'r burning. If it's 16X and you're using NEC burner's then perhaps you may want to try to bump it up a little to 8X and see if you'll get any better results.

I personally don't like to burn any of my precious backups beyond 4X, but I've done roughly 15% of my backups with 8X in the past and so far they get nearly the same "Quality Score" and "PIF" just like all of my 4X burned (some does slightly has a few PIF more, like 3 though).

My question I think is a little differnt, I have been bburning my store bought movies for a back-up for several years now, I never heard of ty disc's before but over the last several months since joining afterdawn I have learned they are suppose to be the best, I have a 3 year old compaq presario with a philips dvd writer 6200 model, I have bewen using memorex, maxell, hp's, and fuji's, sure every once in a great while I would get a coaster, maybe one per 50, but anyway, since reading about these ty's I saw a sale from supermedia.com store and orderd 200 ty dvd+r, got them like a week later and was excited, firtst I noticed that there is no labiling on any disc, they have little numbers you can hardly see but really dont mean nothing anyway to me, ecah package 50 per did have a little white label on top of the pakage, its all forign anyway, and even bieng a forign print nothing resembles anything saying ty, I hear this supermedia.com is suppose to be reputable, hope so, anyway, I tried to copy my first movie last night and guess what, error, tried another one from another package, error also, I pulled out mt hp disc's and it worked fine, and the only thing that was english on that package that I could understand was a caution label, saying might not work if your firmware is not up to date or whatever that means, well my other disc's like hp, maxell, memorex and fuji say the same thing, but niether give me trouble, did I get ripped here, why my burner works with all disc's except this ty thing I have no clue, and I'm still a novice with computers when it comes to things like maybe having to go to the site everybody gives to update firmware, ity says to go to dvdrwservices.com but it has tought me nothing, I hope I didnt thow my $80 out the window, does anything sound familiar here, like are these ty disc not labeled etc. please help, thanks Fred

Well I ordered these: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-r-media-100.html and haven't had any problems. Maybe since your burner is older, it's just not very compatible with TY's. I use them for backing up PS2 games and they are perfect as I'm now well into my second cake box. I used them with an older Sony external burner and a brand new Sony DRU-810A internal burner without any issues. Maybe some of the more knowledgeable members in this section can help you out, most of my knowledge is in the PS2 arena.

    @FredBun

How fast did you burned them? What programs/applications did you used to burn? Again, like the media stated, have you updated your burner's firmware to the latest available? What's your burner's model/brand? In query to dvd burning, it is recommend to always stay on top with firmware, so make sure you updates to the most current on your drive before burning. In addition, even the mdia you're using is 8X or 16X, it's always best to burn them at 4X only.

    Keep up posted.

one word to add to alkohol's post, FIRMWARE~!

    http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

if you have an older burner and your Memorex, HP, Fuji, etc ALL work just fine, there is a VERY good chance that your firmware is NOT UP to date to recognize some GOOD QUALITY media :)

what rated speed are the 200 pack TYs you just purchased from SMS.com? i'm assuming the 8x dvd+r w/ YUDEN000T02 coding...

    docTY~

Hello people, 1st I want to thank the people that have responded to my problem about my ty dvd disc's not working, let me respond to the questions you gave me, I have a Compaq Presario, about 3 and a half years old, I ordered it special because I wanted a DVD-ROM and a DVD+RW writer, back than nobody was selling both in a computer not that I have seen anyway, salesman from circuit city told me nobody wants two drives thats why they dont make them, well quess what they all make them now, anyway, the writer is a philips 6200 model that came with the computer, never had any problems, I think the writer has a max speed of 4x, than I dont think anything was faster, but no problem, it takes me to copy a movie from about half hour to 45 min., I always copy my movies on two disc's because I don't like compression so much it might not bother some people but to my eye I can see a difference, I wish I didnt, I use DVDXPlatinum, not the 321 studio, the new one that also offers vidiovault, and by the way, my 321 dvdxcopy that I purchased when it first came out, still works great, the only reason I purchased dvdxplat was because my dvdxcopy started to frezze up, I was getting a lot of coasters, like I said before I still do not understand computers that well, and dvdxcopy is so easy to use, after reading other peoples problems at afterdawn some said that my cpu usage was to high, I said cpu what the hell is that, I did some research and everytime I did freeze up my cpu was to high, I did something I read up on afterdawn, I purchased another ram, I always had 512 and I added another 512, after that my dvdxcopy never froze again, I still use my dvdxcopy more than dvdxplat. because dvdxplat. can be very confusing to use somtime, I still cant figure out its many features, but anyway, I did buy 200 ty's from supermedia.com, they came in 4 packages of 50 each, it was about $80, they are dvd+r 8x, I never use a higher speed cause I cant anyway, my writer is a max of 4x, iv'e used 4x, 8x, 16x dvd's, all worked just fine, except for these ty's, no matter what I do I get errors, also, like I said before, I was kinda suprized that none of those disc's have anykind of labeling, all my hp, memerex, maxell, fuji, are all labeled, are these ty's not being labeled is that comin? also like I said before, the only english part on the package was a caution part, saying firmware might has to be up to date, I don't even know what that means or how to do it, and if I do what if something goes wrong, besides me updating things like my virus software, sypware software and window uptates always have been easy to do with no problems, I have had a bad experince once in updating my easy cd creator when it told me to do so, after updated it my computer went blank, no matter what I did I could not get it going again, thank God my son years back installed Roxio Go-Back, I used it and it brought my computer back to life just like it was before with no problems, thank you go-back, now I'm scared s------s to update anything, it says to go to dvdrwservices.com, man so confusing, but you know what, I have learned more things about computers by logging on to afterdawn than any school could teach me, all the people at afterdawn the members I mean are just great, and I also learned from members at afterdawn was that always make sure your ty disc's are made in Japan and not Taiwan, well how are you suppose to know if nothing on the pakage or on the disc's itself says nothing, sure my invoice from supermedia.com says it's a ty, not from where, so but is it really, anyway, I hope I dint't ger ripped, this is only the second time I have used the forum with afterdawn, I have so many questions but fell so stupid to ask them, especially with my dvdxplat. and videvault, maybe it's time to get of my insecurity and just ask, thank you, Fredrick.

    @frederick

there is no need to feel bad about asking your questions, all you simply need to do is ask...i for one am always willing to help when i can with someone as sincere as you~ :)

anyways, being new to computers in general can be quite "scary" at first, we ALL start somewhere, nothing wrong with that at all...

i can see how the whole "firmware" update can seem daunting as there ARE dire consequences if you "flash" it incorrectly; i'm not saying this to further intimidate you or scare you, i am simply letting you know a HONEST TRUTH of the matter...

ok...lemme see if i can link you to the EXACT firmware you need for your particular drive...we can take everything slowly and at the pace you are comfortable with...

i checked at rpc (the link i have from my earlier post) and could not find your philips 6200 drive...i also went the usa philips site and could not find that model number either as a dvd burner, i found others similar but they were either standalone recorders or receivers...weird...

also tried the compaq website, now that they are joined w/ HP, they offer all these links for drivers/software download, but i need to know the SPECIFIC compaq presario model number of your desktop to proceed any further....there is a HUGE list of various desktop models, i have no idea which one is yours...and even so, this doesn't tell me much about your actual dvd burner.. :)

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...6200&tool=softwareCategory&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en

you say your dvd burner is a Philips brand/model 6200? i'm not at all familiar with Philips products, but i couldn't find it at the firmware website...or on google for that particular model made by Philips...

hmm...perhaps we can back-track and let me know the EXACT model number of your Compaq Presario...and maybe i can find out what drive went into that particular model at time of release/purchase.. :)

lastly, regarding Taiyo Yuden from supermediastore.com, i purchase almost ALL my TYs from them, so, i know for a FACT they sell the genuine thing...and regarding the top label being all in a foreign language...does it look like this?

the top is written in japanese, the one to the left is german, the one to the right is french (i believe) and the bottom description is in english...i went to that website, it offers absolutely NO help at all in terms of firmware for pc drives... :(

those are definitely genuine Taiyo Yudens and they are made in japan, just for your information...despite them not telling you...you can double check any particular disc in the 50-pack spindle and look for this: "TG000xxx" (where xxx is the numerical batch number for when they were made) this coding above will tell you and verify that those are authentic Taiyo Yudens, ALL TYs have a similar coding in both formats...this is found around the inner hub of the disc, it's laser inscribed and is very small, might be difficult to read, but it's DEFINITELY there... :)

i can assist u further once i know the exact model number of your compaq presario or the exact model number of your philips drive, i might be losing my touch, but i couldn't find the 6200 anywhere` :p

hang in there, we will guide you through this...well, i will try my best at least~

    docTY~

Hi Again and thanks for responding again, ok, I did reluctently giggle a bit when I read that you people were puzzled on optaining info about the dvd writer I have, I know because nobody I talk to can answer that question because nobody can't find it either, but believe me it's there, and let me explain a little bit in my version why this may be, remember when I said that I special ordered this computer from circuit city because I wanted a dvd reader and a dvd+rw, which I got, I also purchased with it a 4 year extented warranty that circuit city sells, it's an outside warranty, as much as I hate extended warrantys I did learn when it comes to computers they are worth it especially if you don't know much about them, it has paid off in spades because I called then 4 times since I bought it, they come to my house, I'm a little handicapped so it was well worth it, but there was problems, when they would come they always came with the wrong part, even tought on the phone I always gave them my exact numbers of everything they asked, but the tech still would come with the wrong parts, after he would take the computer apart and see the bad part for himself than he would re-order and with another weeks wait I would finally get it fixed, this happened every time they came, and it wasnt till the 4th time when I finally talked to his parent company and blasted them why do you guys send this man over with the wrong part every time, than that person questioned me on some things and finnaly found out that I ordered this computer special order, he said that's were the confusion comes in, if that'she truth or not who know's, the last time a tech was here was about a year ago and so far so good, the model number for this compaq is presario 8000 series, model number is 8RSXE1, and it's this model number that confuses many people because nobody can find it, also I copyied some of my info from this computer from a site I use called belarc adviser, it's a great site they tell you just about everything that's inside your computer almost down to a screw, you will see I do have a reader and a writer, the reader is a compaq and my writer is a philips DVD6002, and I said it was a 6200, I know idiot me, please forgive me,but I think you will still have trouble finding the 6002 because other peole that try'd failed also, I also looked up the dvdrwservices.com and again it was very confusing, when you go to that site it doesnt guide you anywhere to upgrade a drive, it has all kind's of other info but that, and yes I am kinda paranoid about that because just what you mentioned if not done right i'm screwed, but that's why I'm here maybe you guy's can help by guiding me to do it right, also, you are absolutly right about the picture you sent me, it's exactly the same white cover that lays on top of the ty disc's, and you were also right about the numbers on each disc, my numbers are TG001186, so I guess they are othenthic, than you so much for that, it still baffles me why all my other disc's work but not these ty's, and even my hp disc's which I only got a couple of weeks ago still work fine also, meaning maybe newer disc's e.g. like 6 months ago maybe to present thinking I might need somekind of upgrade with new disc's, but no, I still have disc's I bought a year ago and present one's and all work except for these ty's, (intersting), my mind just says go figure. now here is what I am pasteing just to give you a little idea whats inside my computer, and again, I thank you people so much for your help, Fredrick.

Hey, check this out... I tested one of my ridisc dvd-r 8x discs that have a cmc mag AE1 code... these are the discs I used to use sometimes.

    Not bad eh?

    This is the full scan

    [edit]
Just to clarify, I don't use these discs anymore, but though it interesting that they got a higher quality rating than the Taiyo yudens, verbatim or ritek that I use now...

Here is the link for you to get the latest firmware version for your drive: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces

It does make a difference which order the numbers are in. This drive was easy to find with the correct information.

I would update my firmware and then try the TY's. I think you will find that they work.

    Cheers.

Does anybody know of a program that will do a disc quality check on an LG DVD drive? From what I have read in here Nero won't do it and I don't think DVDInfo Pro will either.
