On a DVD is there a way to create a keypad and have the kid enter their name and store it in some buffer and call it when it needs to? This is my first DVD project. I am wondering what the limitations are.

What authoring package would be the best for what I want.

Please give some help.. say this is in no way possible or look at such website or such and such board, something... I need to get this information please help me find what I am looking for..

Ahtos, DVD-Video that can be played on a standalone DVD player for television do not support the features you are looking for. DVD-Video only provide a rudimentary set of interactivity dealing mainly with menu navigation.

You can probably create such a thing for DVD-ROM with multimedia features to run on a PC. Then you can store just about anything you want on the PC's HDD. However, this disc will not play on your standalone DVD player.
