I am new to this forum as well as digital video authoring. I apologize if this is in the forum section so please advise me if it should be in another.

Basically, I have a HD video camera which records on a hard drive in AVCHD format. I am looking to preserve these home movies on a external hard drive as well as burn them to a DVD or Blu-ray disc. I see that I can burn these to a DVD and play them on a Blu-ray player. So my question is this; is it best to get a Blu-ray burner and burn them to a Blu-ray disc or is it just as good (and cheaper) to burn to a DVD-R and play on a Blu-ray player?
