I read the glossary on .AVI file extensions and I have a question.I have never uploaded anything, so I was wondering that since AVI is only a structure and not an encoding scheme, how do files end up in .AVI format? If they are uploaded using Windows, does it do it automatically? Sorry for the nebie question, but I am lost on how .AVI are created. Thanks

as you said avi is not an encoding scheme.
    its a container.
think it as a folder with video, audio and maybe subtitles put into it.

the video can be of any codec, usually mpeg4 base, divx, xvid, etc.
and the audio mp3, ac3, etc.

i don't get what you meant by upload automatically...

like in email, you attach something to it. thats uploading, sending this message to is a kind of uploading. you're sending it....

maybe you memant streaming. i don't think avi is meant for streaming....

Let me ask again. I downloaded an episode of Star Trek to watch off of the internet. The file was in .avi format. How did it get that way?

you use software such as virtualdub, assign the necessary stream and save them as avi, it will wrap them in avi.

does this answer your question ?

Yes, thanks. I don't mind admitting that this video stuff may be out of my league. Each answer seems to spawn additional questions. I am probably at the sub 101 level....:)
